The people of Southport are to get a second chance to have their say over
controversial Sefton Council plans to radically alter the nature of the
    town.

A second 'open session' of the Southport Area Committee is to be held
Wednesday 7th December to discuss the 'Southport Strategy' document drawn
up for the Council's Bootle bosses by private consultants.

Southport Area Committee Chair, Councillor Richard Hands says:

"Although the Council did not officially seek consultation responses on
this document, the Southport councillors want to be advised by residents of
the town as to their views."

The town hall council chamber was packed to capacity back in July when the
Southport Councillors held a special meeting to let local people to have an
initial say on the plans. Now Southport Lib Dem councillors want to let
residents decide how they feel about the revised plan. The Area Committee
meeting where it will be discussed commences at 6.30 pm on Wednesday 7th
    December.

Town Centre Councillor Tony Dawson, the Council's deputy Lib Dem Leader says:

"There was uproar in the council chamber last time this report was
discussed. Some of the more silly things within the original draft have now
disappeared, such as the crazy idea to move the Carousel on the Promenade.

"So now, the report has been 'tweaked' and passed for publication by the
Sefton Cabinet. Some things in the original report have been changed but
some elements remain pretty much the same."

""It is entirely up to the people of Southport now as to what happens now.
We can endorse this plan, ignore it or oppose it. On the other hand, we can
get together and try to use the best bits of this plan as a launch-pad to
help make Southport a town which both retains its best points from the past
and is fit for the future. If the people of Southport do not stand up for
ourselves then alien ideas may be imposed having been created by and
implemented by outsiders. Whatever your views, the Councillors who you
elect would like to hear them. Come along to the town hall and speak to us."

Alien ideas? Get a grip man, it's full of good ideas that will benefit the town.
    What are Cllr Dawson's alternatives?

As I read it, unlike you, I take it as Alien Ideas that may be thought up by outsiders in the future.

Perhaps Cllr Dawson can get the Council to stop listening to ideas from the other outsider and his moronic cycling pressure group.

Given that the town relies on the custom of "outsiders" then maybe ideas thought up by outsiders might help bring them here.
The only bright idea our local Lib Dems have voiced is a tram from the Pier to Asda. That'll fetch the crowds back!

Can we have a second chance on whether we still want the services of Cllrs Dawson and Barton plus our MP?

Meeting is already being teed up to disappoint with the opener "drawn up for the council's bootle bosses ".....

The fact the meetings have been held with a speech about have my a tram to Asda being the highlight shows there's a lack of ideas so back to slamming and blasting with the need for private consultants.

Let's not forget it's nearly a year since our MP said he was "distinctly underwhelmed" with the report so you'd have to ask what ideas has he or his team done to produce new ideas....Lord Fearn also seems to think the town "hasn't got worse"...

Good ideas you must be some kind of Comedian or on the council payroll its a disaster for southport,Most of it sounds like script for a clown convention,,Might as well put the town in a coffin and cremate it,rather than implement that pile of garbage,,

Do you mean Cherry Brandy? If so no thanks, find it a bit of a waste of money and surprisingly bitter.

Ultimately it feels like our current crop of electives or at least the publicity hungry ones are not the people to fight or drive the town forward, they may fight with each other e.g this new found excitement over phone boxes. But they won't fight for the good of the town or work with other parties when needed as their little clubs come first at all times....for that they should be replaced with people looking after the best interests of the town.

Not sure why you don't understand what I said but I guess you're choosing ignorance like when you're asked if you are a councillor or not

    8. Sue McGuire..gave an almost Churchillian speech...shop local eat local and we need a tram from the Pier to Central 12. - See more at: http://southport.qlocal.co.uk/southp....MkSoQ4UM.dpuf

But how do you know that?

For all you know councillors are trying to "drive the town forward" but if you oppose them publicising what they are doing then how would you ever know? You can't have it both ways.

And how do you know that councillors don't "work with other parties when needed"? They very likely do it all the time, but maybe don't want criticism from idiots like you that they are "publicity hungry" so don't publicise it.

A lot of the electives have been in position a long time for both parliament and local politics to have expected to have something hats can be clearly hung on for how the town has been driven forward rather than tattling on forums with other councillors about who called someone about a phone box first. Like whether you're a councillor you've avoided that question for years.

There is more evidence that our councillors don't work cross party and are trying to undermine/divide across parties so exactly what do you expect when our most publicity hungry ones like Dawson and Barton seem to make efforts to out do each other...if you look at the other site and read some of Cllr Dawson's comments they hardly would fill you with confidence he'd be easy or effective to work with unless you are a Lib!

Well and you've also got the article is more linked to Cllr Hands as he's "Southport Area Committee Chair", yet we get a picture of Cllr Dawson which would lead to which ego is being polished.

Ultimately our electives in my mind need to give us confidence that:

    1) It actually matters whether we give our views to support, oppose or ignore as they're very keen to point out it's for "Bootle Bosses" and "the Council did not officially seek consultation responses on this document". So is it just more hot air, slamming and blasting or is there an actual plan behind this potential mutiny
    2) they have some ideas and things to bring to the table, it's very easy to pick faults and holes in things but it's a lot harder to provide reasoned and good suggestions of improvement. This is what we should look for in electives as it's what will drive the town forward, constant blocking, slamming and blasting will drive investment away, stifle ideas and create further divisions with the rest of the borough. This is one of the reasons I think it's vital that the rosettes are put to one side consistently and we have a single voice working together for the people that elected and pay into the allowances of the councillors.
    3) It's not going to be a continuation of blaming others for lack of progress, if the electives have been round long enough without visible progress/improvement then need to consider whether they are the right people for the job, pointing the finger elsewhere does not help and maybe should give someone else a chance rather than point scoring with the opposition.

We should also not brush over the fact this report has been about for a long time and what has been done in the interim for new ideas since about a year ago our MP was underwhelmed and our councillors jumped on the bandwagon to condemn the report. There have been people from the town involved in the consultations so shouldn't be perceived as so cloak and dagger always.

Don't feel like this is too much to ask.....as it's the kind of things that are promised at election time and as for publicising what they do, needs to be noteworthy not tattling with opposition councillors about who phoned someone first or writes an article "calling for" something but without actually calling them....it's probably a shame for the other councillors if they do exhibit some of these positive traits as unfortunately it's masked by a lot of this noise.
