The first readings taken by the Environment Agency rate the sea water quality along the Southport coastline as good.
Our neighbours across the Ribble Estuary in St Annes and Blackpool have been warned that it is not advisable to swim in the sea due to animal waste on the beach.

The water at Southport is absolutely filthy. Full of silt and goodness knows what else. No way in the world would I risk "bathing" here, especially when you would need to walk out about ½ a mile from the water's edge to get a sufficient depth to actually swim in. If you are unaware of what it is like, go and take a look for yourself.
