While any clash between Southport and Chester is crucial, Saturday’s truly is something of a six-pointer for the home side.

The Sandgrounders are three points from safety, and after ending a run of four straight losses last week they now must push on and start winning games if they are to survive in the Vanarama National League.

They could be assisted by the return of forward Louis Almond to the club on a loan deal from Tranmere Rovers.

Almond was crucial to Southport’s survival last year, earning himself the player of the season award. If he can rediscover that form then survival will be a more realistic prospect for Andy Preece’s men.

Another new forward, Lindon Meikle, caught the eye at Woking last week, adding danger to an attack that during Southport’s last outing at Haig Avenue looked somewhat toothless, especially in the second half of the defeat to Dagenham & Redbridge.

Considering the defensive frailty on show that afternoon two weeks ago, a clean sheet at Woking will be a further boost to the confidence of management, players and supporters alike.

Chester come into the game on the back of four straight defeats, and have only registered four points in 2017.

Former fan favourite Luke George will return to face his former club, as will former trialist Ryan Astles.

Meanwhile Southport will be hoping that new signing Kevin de Veiga Monteiro will be available, so fans can see what their new signing has to offer after he missed the Woking game.
