    The independent Government-commissioned independent 'Hendry Review'
    published endorsement of the strategic role of Tidal Lagoons in the UK has
    given Southport campaigners a boost.

    The campaign to gain a Tidal Lagoon for Southport has been spearheaded by
    local councillor Fred Weavers and promoted heavily by John Pugh MP and the
    Lib Dem council group. The positive outlook for Tidal energy presented in
    the review means it is more likely that the initial pilot project in
    Swansea Bay will go ahead. If that is considered successful then Southport
    is one of several 'follow up sites' available for continuing the programme.

    The Review into the feasibility and practicality of tidal lagoon energy in
    the UK, led by former Enerrgy Minister Charles Hendry, was commissioned in
    February 2016 to assess:

    - whether, and in what circumstances, tidal lagoons could play a cost
    effective role as part of the UK energy mix;
    - the potential scale of opportunity in the UK and internationally,
    including supply chain opportunities;
    - a range of possible structures for financing tidal lagoons;
    - different sizes of projects as the first of a kind;
    - whether a competitive framework could be put in place for the delivery
    of tidal lagoon projects.

    Business and Energy Secretary Greg Clark commended Mr Hendry and his team
    for their hard work and said:

    “I am grateful to Charles and his team for the hard work that has gone into
    the Review. The issues are particularly complex as they relate to untried
    technology in the marine environment. The Government’s energy planning is
    focused on ensuring affordable, secure, low-carbon energy. We will now
    consider recommendations and determine what decision is in the best
    interests of the UK energy in the long term.”

    A full government response will be published in due course..

    The independent report can be accessed via the Independent Review of Tidal
    Lagoons website.

    What exactly are they doing to campaign and "spearhead" this as it's not clear, Southport isn't even listed on the list of projects, West Cumbria being the closest.

    Also if waiting for Swansea then it's around 2022 at the earliest before any "follow up", feels like another empty campaign too far into the future to measure success of our lacklustre electives.
