A Southport Labour Party spokesperson responded:
"It seems Mr Moore has finally gone "full Trump" as not only does he already block those constituents on social media who disagree with his views but now he cries "fake news".
Just the other day he was telling people that he'd not voted for the clause because he claimed it was some sort of delaying tactic to slow down the EU Withdrawal Bill but now that he has taken his instructions from on high he says it was actually because it was a faulty clause that wouldn't have achieved its aims. Bodies such as the RSPCA have expressed similar concerns to ourselves and they are still asking that a specific commitment to animal sentience be added to the Brexit legislation; is Mr Moore accusing the RSPCA of spreading "fake news" too?
It's good that the Government is now seeking to clarify its position but that has only come after a public outcry. Until a firm piece of UK legislation arrives specifically guaranteeing animal sentience, which the current legislation does not have, then Mr Moore cannot possibly justify his "fake news" claim and would do far better to spend his time ensuring that animal sentience is clearly recognised in statute rather than pursuing this lame excuse."

Really?! You need to actually read the article you just referenced, it clearly states the following at the very beginning :
"Last week, UK MPs voted against incorporating part of an EU treaty recognising that animals can feel emotions into the EU Withdrawal Bill. It means that after Brexit, the UK will not recognise the existence of animal feelings, such as pain and suffering, in the same way as EU countries."
Then it says, with my emphasis in bold:
"Ministers argued that UK law already provides similar protections to animals but the decision sparked an outpouring of protest on social media."
Just because the Tories are arguing that case does not make it fact.
What is fact is that the UK law Theresa May referenced, the 2006 Animal Welfare Act does not anywhere in it refer to animal sentience and in fact it does not even cover wild animals, farm animals or those in laboratories... which is why bodies such as the RSPCA are concerned and are still calling for the clause to be put in Brexit legislation.
Nothing fake about the concern of the RSPCA or others about the lack of specific animal sentience legislation and the Tories voting against it, the Govt is just trying to deflect and make excuses in the face of the massive public backlash.
