Planned roadworks in the North West: Weekly summary for Monday 2 – Sunday 8 December 2013

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 29 November but could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

M6 Junction 33 Lancaster
A project is taking place to repair bridges carrying the M6 over local roads. The work involves routine concrete repairs and installing new safety barriers along the southbound carriageway just north of Junction 33. The work is due to be completed by Friday 20 December. Some lane closures and a 50mph speed limit will be in place.

M6 Junction 38 Tebay
A contraflow system is in place on the M6 near Junction 38 at Tebay as part of a major refurbishment of a motorway bridge which carries the M6 over the River Lune. Southbound traffic will be directed into lanes on the northbound carriageway while the bridge is closed for the repairs. Two lanes will run in each direction and a 40mph speed limit will be in place. The project is due to be completed by March 2014

M6 Junction 40 Penrith
The entry slip road onto the northbound side of the M6 will be closed overnight for resurfacing, between 8pm and 6am, from Monday 2 until Thursday 5 December. A clearly signed diversion will be in place.

M55 Junction 1 Broughton
Resurfacing work, drainage repairs and lighting installation is being carried out around Broughton Interchange, north of Preston, affecting both the eastbound and westbound M55 links to and from the southbound M6. All the work will be taking place between 8pm and 6am each night with lane closures in place. Some full closures of the motorway carriageways will also be necessary, which will be publicised on the motorway in advance. Diversions will be in place when the road is closed, and the project is due to be completed by Sunday 22 December.

M60 Junction 24 Denton
A major project is taking place to boost safety and reduce congestion at Junction 24 of the M60 at the Denton Island roundabout where the motorway meets the M67 and the A57. The first phase of the project is due to be completed by February next year, with a second phase due to start in March. No work will take place over the Christmas and New Year holidays, and the whole project is due to be completed by June 2014. All of the work during the first phase will take place overnight, and involve lane closures and speed limit reductions on the slip roads and roundabout. At times, full slip road closures will be needed overnight with clearly-signed diversions in place.

M60 Junction 25 Bredbury to Junction 1 Stockport
Overnight maintenance work is being carried out on both sides of the M60 between Junctions 25 and 1, which includes drainage work, improvements to junction signs and resurfacing. The work will take place between 10pm and 5am during weekdays and between 10pm and 7am at weekends, and will require some lane and slip road closures. It is due to be completed by Monday 16 December, and diversions will be in place when slip roads are closed.

M62 Junction 11 Birchwood to Junction 12 Eccles Interchange
A project is underway to provide smoother journeys along a section of the M62 between Birchwood and Eccles Interchange. All lanes and the hard shoulders on a two mile section between Junctions 11 and 12 are being resurfaced to help make the motorway smoother. Two lanes of either the westbound or eastbound carriageway will be closed between 10pm and 5am on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday nights, with a single lane closure also in place during the day on Saturdays and Sundays. Either the eastbound entry slip road or the westbound exit slip road at Junction 11 will be closed between 10pm on Friday nights and 5am on Monday mornings, with clearly-signed diversions for motorists. A 50mph speed limit will be in place past the roadworks, and the scheme is due to be finished by the end of January. No work will be carried out over the Christmas and New Year holiday period.

A55 Chester
Resurfacing, repair and maintenance work is taking place along the A55 near the junction with the A483, south of Chester. The scheme, which includes drainage repairs and replacing road signs, is due to be completed by Friday 20 December. All of the work will be carried out overnight on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, between 10pm and 5am. Clearly signed diversions will be in place when parts of the road are closed.

A66 Cockermouth
Work is taking place to improve pedestrian access around the roundabout where the A66 meets the A5086 Lamplugh Road, south of Cockermouth. The project, which is due to be completed by Monday 9 December, involves constructing new footpaths and new crossing points on traffic islands, as well as tactile paving. Drainage will also be improved. A 40mph speed limit will be in place and, on rare occasions, traffic may be held at traffic lights and taken through the roadworks in 10mph convoys led by a contractor's vehicle.

A66 Penrith
Work is taking place to tackle potholes and carry out other repairs along a section of the A66 between Penruddock and Highgate, west of Penrith. The scheme involves resurfacing, replacing reflective road studs and road markings, and kerb and drainage repairs. Work will be carried out between 8pm and 6am overnight, and between 9.30am and 3.30pm during the day. Temporary traffic lights and a 40mph speed limit will be in place, and the project is due to be finished by Friday 20 December.

Most of the work will be carried out using narrowed lanes, with temporary traffic lights in place between 9.30am and 3.30pm. There will also be a 40mph speed limit and laybys will be closed. No work will take place during the festive period, from Friday 20 December until Monday 6 January, and the project is due to be completed by Sunday 26 January.

A590 / A5092 Greenodd
Work is taking place to build a new roundabout linking the A590 to the A5092 at Greenodd, with the aim of reducing congestion and improving safety. The A590 currently forms a T-junction with the A5092, with traffic having to pull into a gap in the central reservation to turn right towards Ulverston. The project is due to be completed by February 2014.
