Birkdale Village Shops 70's -> 80's
All this has got me thinking about shops that used to be in Birkdale Village. I can't seem to find any photos on the net
I used to get off the bus from school in Birkdale Village and used to use the sweet shops etc..
I remember:
The Quality Shop (sweet shop) Now Farrell's estate agents.
Entwistles (I think it was called) Sweets, toys etc. Now the Abbey Building Society.
Playwell sports shop (now a carpet shop)
I seem to recall another sweet shop roughly where Broughs the butchers is now but I don't recall what it was called.
Moretti's cake shop (yummy )
The TSB bank - now a trendy wine bar
A vague memory of a small record shop, roughly where Spar is now.
I remember the manually operated level crossing gates where the guy in the wooden room on stilts would furiously spin a large ships type wheel to open and close the big wooden gates.
Any more I wonder?

I can remember the record shop , i remember buying "back home " by the England world cup team from there. Also Entwistles the Newsagent also sold Corgi & Dinky toy car`s , a proper 1960 `s type Newsagent .
My mum & dad always got the TV from Gibsons the rental shop near there...

Who had the little kiosk as you approached the Liverpool, bound platform at Birkdale Station ? Used to buy my sweets from there when getting the train home ?

I don't remember the TV shop. I guess I only remember what was relevant to me at the time (sweets and cakes LOL)
I got my first meccano set (pocket meccano) from Entwistles and his shop was great for Top Trumps.

Yep, Polanski is still there (though different owners )
I don't remember Gibsons TV shop but my Mum does, in fact we had a TV from them.
Also recall, just over the train crossing Goulders (I think) Volvo car sales.
Also Ellis Newsagents (he of the huge paper round fame, I hated doing the paper round, never know why I did it as I spent all the money on sweets and chocolate bars!).
Back over the train lines (and maybe a bit later along the time line?) was the Betamax video rental shop (now a wedding dress shop?) its quite a smallish shop.
My Mum did remind me about the shop that was called "Chimes " (we think) it is now a cafe/coffee bar. It used to sell jewelry, fancy goods etc. A rather poor photo of it today taken on my phone (terrible shot but it serves a purpose)

Does anyone remember Mr Leather? He used to sell and repair bycycles in a tiny little workshop immediately adjacent to the level crossing, opposite side to the station. He was there for a long time up until the mid-seventies. I once bought a white racing cycle from him, as a schoolboy it was my pride and joy.
Does anyone also recall the Copper Kettle restaurant almost exactly next door to Mr Leather?

Do you think that's really wise?

Yes, I remember Bill Leather. My dad swore by him when I was a kid.
The sweet shop near the butchers was called WOOD's. A proper traditional old sweet shop. I remember going and spending old pennies and threepenny bits in there.
Entwistles was where I bought my first comics from, but later my mum worked at Ellis's, where the Macolls shop is now on Weld Parade.

I had a paper round at Entwistles and Mr Entwistle was a stickler for time keeping,he had a manner about him that was a little unusual and thinking back he wouldn't have looked out of place in a Carry on Film alongside Kenneth Williams
What was the name of the car showroom that was in the block that houses the Spar?

Townsend Brothers, Builder merchant and a Bathroom showroom,
McCabes on the other side of the road.
The small record shop I went to in the 70's was across the road from the Conservative Club, it was run by a lady who would order even the most obscure single for you, I think it may be a pet food shop now.
Never, ever, argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience

At the furthest end of Weld Parade is a hairdressers, cant remember the name of it now but I worked there when I left school for Betty Polansky, it was called Weld Parade Coiffure then. I was told it was built on the site of the old police station cells and was rather creepy in the room at the back of the shop
The shop that was where the tea rooms are now used to sell handbags - I had maybe 3 or 6 from there
