    Images of Formby Past

The Formby Civic Society now have just under 3,000 of their archive images on Flickr

This post was placed on the Formby Forum on the 28th June, however in view of the small number of views it was thought a post on this forum would be of interest.

Many of these images were taken by Muriel Sibley from the 1960's through to the 1980's. In addition the Society hold over 700 of her drawings/watercolours and these have also been added.

Comments have been added to a small number of these images and more will be added. Please do add your comments as it is hoped to build up an extensive library of information to record, for the future, the history of the Village.

The Society would welcome any additional images of old Formby. Arrangements can be made to collect these, make digital copies and return them with a CD. Just contact the Society.

A few images cover Southport and these can be found HERE .

Sketches by Muriel Sibley of Southport (1st 4) are HERE .

Over 2,000 further more recent images will be added over the coming weeks.

Borough Guide To Formby 1900c .

The Society hold 8 copies of the Guides covering the years from 1900c to 1972. The dates are estimated and based on the population of Formby as quoted in the Guides.

These were issued under the auspices of the Formby Urban District Council and were undated. It is thought that being undated the print run was unlimited and so avoided waste in scrapping old issues.

The adverts are possibly the most interesting aspect as much of the narrative is repeated over each issue. Again maybe a saving in cost.

Below are a few pics relating to Southport which are assumed to be prior to 1900.

Clicking on the photo will take you to flickr and enable you to view the image up to the original resolution.

The Formby Seeds 1914 Directory Of Formby has now been added to our Flickr site @ http://www.flickr.com/photos/formbyc...7625552246582/

This lists by road and name every location in Formby in 1914. The Trade adverts may be of special interest.

    Images Liverpool 1960s to 1980s

A number of years ago the Formby Civic Society scanned 446 slides held by the Liverpool History Society to preserve them for the future.

We are pleased that the Liverpool History Society have given us permission to host these images on our Flickr site at http://www.flickr.com/photos/formbyc...198514/detail/

These images are as presented, as time has not allowed us to crop/repair the original slides.

These images have been scanned at 3599x2399 so please make use of Flickr's ability to zoom into the images.

It is now almost 2 years since our archive was made available on Flickr

In these 2 years the number of images available has increased to 4,971 and 237,154 views of these images have been made.

The Society regard the cost of Flickr, at under £20 per year, to be excellent value as the images can be viewed at their full resolution, numbers are not limited, statistics on views are available and comments can be made on individual photos. The most important benefit is that at last our archive can be viewed by people who have an interest in old Formby.

Images have been organised into separate folders (known as Sets) for each road to make it easier to locate those of interest.

Late last year the Formby Photo Group donated 241 slides of Formby, taken in about 1983, and these will be added later this year.

Some of these images do have a value, search Ebay, so regrettably a watermark has had to be added. All images can however be purchased without a watermark, just email the society for details.
