    Southport 1967

To try & kick this Past Spot off how about having a thread for particular years and then everyone posting their own memories of that year?

I have chosen 1967 because it was the first really exciting year of my teens. I started "going out" with girls, & on Saturday 3rd June I went to see my heroes The Who for the first time at the Floral Hall. I was a bit disappointed that Keith Moon was absent due to illness, but had a great time nevertheless. It's amazing to think that every Saturday for 7/6d (37p) you could go and see one of the top groups of the day locally - now you have to go to Manchester or Liverpool and pay £20 - £50 to be miles away from your heroes - you were never more than 50 feet away from them at the Floral.

I got a job on the hook a duck stall on Pleasureland during the summer holidays (years later, according to his autobiography Marc Almond worked on that very same stall - copycat). The owners left their son in charge - he was a couple of years younger and got right up my nose for trying to be an authoritarian "boss". Eventually I had no option other than to dip his head in the duck trough - for which I got the sack. I seem to remember getting £8 per week for 6 ten hour days.

Am I mistaken but didnt we get three editions of the local paper then - Southport Guardian on a Tuesday, Journal on a Thursday, & Visiter on a Saturday?

1967 was also the centenary of Southport becoming a borough and electing its first town council. There must have been some municipal events to celebrate this but I can't remember anything other than the Visiter publishing a souvenir which included good wishes from former famous residents. Does anyone else remember attending any special events?

    Question 1967

You may have been 15 but I was only 12 - and not touched any girls (not that I am admitting to anyway). That particular pleasure was still a year off for me.

67 - year after the world cup - I remember that.

I remember the local paper being 3 times a week as well, and it was a real sized paper.

Wasn't 1967 about the time TOTP started on TV, or maybe that was the year I became aware of other things apart from Bob the IC man. I was 13 then, and fancied a lad down the road like mad -met him last year at Haydock Races, how times and circumstances change people - I realised what a lucky escape I had! (He wasn't that bad but had aged so so much - frightening - maybe I should look in the mirror more often).

    Thumbs up Nice idea Flyp!

1967 - I was 11 and off to secondary school for the first time - dead proud of myself in my brand new bottle green uniform, but brokenhearted because I'd passed my 11+ and was off to the High School while my best mate Sylvia didn't and was off to Meols Cop. She did pass the 12+ and joined me later - but that's another year! Boys were still a whole year away for me, too - I was still into Sindy, Tammy and Tressy ("her hair grows!") dolls: maybe I was a late developer emotionally as well as physically! Yes, no teenage bras for me at 11 - just a liberty bodice!! (Some things never change no matter how old you get!!)

    Cool 1967

1967 was the year I quit playing in a dirty old R n B Band and bought a Scooter. TV 175 Series 11, rear crash bars, Chester Fly Screen, Back Rest, eight mirrors, noisy exhaust , tassels and two whip aerials and it was off to Sissons etc. First Girlfriend was when I was 10, after three and a half weeks I kissed her on the cheek, speeded up a bit in later years

    Red face skinheads ?

    Chas,

Showing skinhead tendancy signs there, or were you just a mod.

I probably have to get to 1968 (13-14) to start my ben sherman days. Didn't want to be a rocker as nicer looking girls seemed to hang around the mods / skinheads.

Where did you put the tassles?

    Cool Ben Shermans

I remember at one point I had 13 Ben Shermans and two Jaytex (They were always check) I have five Ben Shermans today, I still like them. I was never a skinhead but I had short hair. Think I was a hybrid, never had Doc Martins just Ox Blood Comos and Mohair Suits.

I wouldn't even talk to or cast my shadow on a person that was not of my ilk at the time. How anti social !

    Talking 1967

Married for two years, one baby.....

one on the way...born June '68

Couldn't get rid of the excess weight put on during first pregnancy..... despite walking into town...from Crossens, with the BIG Pram.....

    Buckets of Napisan

Used to buy all my shopping at Blowers Supermarket in London Street, if my WEEKLY shop came to more than £2.19.6d I was devastated!

Still about a year before 'Ariel Biological' washing powder came onto the Supermarket shelves..

My Hoover washing machine was 'state of the art' and I was the proud owner of a 'spin-a-rinse'

I won on the pools........ 2/6d...WOW...!!!!!

    I WAS OF COURSE....A CHILD BRIDE......LOL

    1967- what a year!!
I was 13 and had a summer job operating the points on the Lakeside Minature Railway (Pleasureland end) This was when Harry Barlow who had designed and built all the engines still owned it.
There used to be some interesting sit views (for a 13yr old) of courting couple on the grass embankments as I travelled up & down on the train.
Remember this was called the summer of love and there was great music on the radio (was it Caroline North or R1?)
I latter got a Saturday job as a van lad at Coultons.
Yes I remember my first "benny" shirt. I got it secondhand from Bernie Whelan.
Does anyone remember the "The Somewhere Else" club on Neville St.

Chas - Did I ask you if Ian Lloyd used to live on Brighton Road? Can't find the reply but can't remember now which thread it was on - its something to do with my age.

Sue: Try using the search button at the top of the thread list to find the reply you are seeking. Put "Lloyd" into it and it will locate all posts with that in it (it wont let you search for anything less than 4 letters).

    Cool Ian Lloyd

I am not sure if he lived in Brighton Road or not. He played in a band in Southport and worked at Railex as a Fork Lift Truck Driver. He appeared on Ester Ranson's TV programme "Thats Life" and played Amazing Grace on the Accelerator Pedal of the F L Truck using the variation in engine noise when pressing the pedal.

He now lives in Worthing, owns a Hotel, a Driving School, has a collection of Vintage Cars and a selection of lovely Guitars, still plays in a band and has a new wife and family. 10 out of 10 to him I say ! Last time I saw him he was penniless.(20 years ago) Moral of this tale is "Move South"
