Wennington Road Primary School, Southport
A reader of southport.gb.com is searching for information about Wennington Road Primary School, Southport which he attended between 1927 and the early 30s when he gained a scholarship to King George V School.
He can find no reference to it still existing, but would appreciate any information that you can let him have which will help him in the belated writng of his autobiography to hand on to his great grandchildren.
Please help!

I think it was called All Saint's County Primary School situated on the corner of Poulton/Wennington. Demolished (of course). Now a facility for the aged.

You are right Smithy. My dad went there in the mid, late 40`s, and you have got the name right.

By the way the name of the building that you are talking about is Poulton Court. Warden assisted flats, I think.

Hi Emily, I went to All Saints School, in about 1940 until 1946.
I can't remember much about it. It was C of E. the Church was situated quite a distance from it near Hesketh Park. This sadly was burnt down.
I can remember going to school in the winter and all the children had to dry their wet clothes on a fireguard which surrounded a stove and was situated in the middle of the classroom. We were provided with bottles of milk which froze solid in the winter. The very poor children were provided with cheese sandwiches.
On walking day, we walked all the way to the Church and the girls wore white veils and the boys wore their 'best suits' probably their only suits. Canon Morris (the father of The Eagle Comic founder) gave every child a sixpenny piece at Christmas .
The Nursery Teacher was called Miss Hoyle and there was a Miss Cadwell and a Mr. Beardmore.

My dad has had a hard life really. When he was 3 years old his mum went into Walton hospital, and she was there for a long time, operation on her back.
Dad was farmed out to the Sally Bash. It was them that got him into Wenny Rd school.
He made a friend for life there. Billy Johnson, who ended up being my godfather, along with Auntie Sandra who is my god mother.
Dad then ended up in loads of schools in Southport, because his mum was in and out of hospital all the time.
He went to Stanley and Birkdale, I think it was that way round.

Who could ever forget Miss Cadwell and the ruler across the knuckles? what a battle-axe she was, probably could do with a few more like her these days. Oh what fond memories, but looking back, I would'nt change a thing. Miss Cadwell could have quelled a riot with her ruler

Summer 1957 went to a 'dance' at All Saints Church Parochial Hall. (Park Rd.?) The 'band' was just a record player and someone brought records, '78s'. Favourite ones were: Paul Anka's "Diana". Tommy Steele's "Singing The Blues". Elvis's "All Shook Up"
Anyone got a photo of All Saints Church? Tried Googling but nothing came up.

another thought.
All Saints kids were referred to as Squashed Tomatoes!!!!
no idea why.
I met up with Miss Cadwell about forty years later. When I was at school I couldn't sound aitches and she made my life hell about it. I was the fairy godmother in Cinderella and there on the front row was Miss Cadwell, she hadn't altered one bit, she still scared the life out of me.........Consequently, I was giving the closing line in the Panto and I will never forget it till my dying day. Stood in all my glory and out it comes....
And Cinders and er prince lived appily hever hafter.
M.
PS. I got to know her and her sister quite well after this and they were both very nice ladies.

Smithy - there is a photo of All Saints church in the thread "Then & Now - Pictures 100 Years Apart - Series 3 - The Suburbs" which can be found on page 5 of the list of threads in the Past Spot. Alternatively try doing a search for All Saints on this site.

Emily, is this the same Bill Johnson who had brothers Norman, Arthur & Teddy,if so they lived right down the end of Portland st as kids, & later Bill worked with me as a driver at Hollands toffee.& in fact it was either Bill or Normans daughter who was murdered in Southport many years ago.

No its not that Billy Johnson, but this is where it gets complicated. My mums sister married Allan, who is Billys and Normans brother.
It was Billys daughter, Lesley who was murdered on the golf.
I think it was in 1969.
