caffs
Here are my memories from the early 70's....please fill in the gaps.
Kardomah- Posh, with a lovely loud coffee machine.Seem to remember it burned down due to a gas leak?
Botanic Garden's - Loads of inflatable bunnies and toys hanging from the roof.Did a nice milky coffee with a free Morning Coffee biscuit.
El Kabalah/Gallery Grill - Used to go in with my auntie to meet her trendy mates, did good strawbery milkshakes.Always exciting in there, but I was about 3.
Sissons - My Mum worked in here. Remember a really lovely, heavy and elaborate front door.
The Cleveland - Again my Mum worked here briefly,it was by the bus station so an early transport type caff.
The Dutch Chef - This was where you went if you were into toast - did a nice line in doorstop toast with tea. Also good view over Lord St.
The Swan - Not strictly a caff/tea room but somewhere to go for a meal out. Onions in a bowl made it unique.
Outdoor cafe,Lord St - The novelty of having coffee OUTSIDE was too much excitement to bear.
Market Cafe - Steamy and lots of nice smells.
Let me know if you think of any more....am having a nostalgic look at Southport as I'm now down South.

Gerardos - Coffee Bar - London Street (where Ladbrokes is now) by the Nat West Bank, Juke Box etc.
Rossis - Ice Cream Parlour - Ovaltine in the winter, after swimming, and a packet of 'Nibbits'. Luxury!

You still get a biccy at Botanic Gardens with your coffee....
I remember smoking my first illicit cigarettes in there.
When did MacDonalds open in town? 1980?
A mates mum gave us money to go there on opening day. Queued for about 3 hours for a burger, fries and a root beer (remember that?) How cool did we feel!!!!!

There were two cafe restaurants on Eastbank Street.
One I think it was called the Gallery Grill, just past the transport office. The other,my favourite....three course was nice and cost
I think it was around 2.25,was up the road from Bradford and Bingley. Was it called the Granada Grill? It was always very busy
and the grub was good.

Andy's Snack Bar.
Never been in (by B & M's) but it's where my Mum and Dad met in the 60's,so always seemed like a romantic one for me!

Think it was the early 80's....still remember the Co Op that was there before. Remember queuing there too, think it was my first burger in a bun experience, and definitely remember hanging onto the empty fries box when walking around town later, sadly thought it meant I was cool.

I never went into the Gallary Grill after they wouldn't serve me a starter as a main.
My two lads had ordered a main meal, I only wanted a snack, but the refused, so they lost our custom!

Not an intimate, romantic, venue.
Good for a quick snack though

On my 1st visit back to the UK in 1984, my niece insisted we go to "McDonalds where the Co-op used to be" So it was certainly there then. The fare on offer was horrible and, probably still is!
Just be yourself, no one else is better qualified!!

Armitage's Dining Room
In the late 1950s Les Armitage's chip shop (Hart Street?) had a hardboard petition on the door of which was written "Dining Room". Inside there were two small tables and a smell of aging lard. It makes MacDonald's seem like haute cuisine.

does anyone remember when swiss chalet at back of woolworths ,above the card shop was a balconey inside overlooking card shop? ie the card shop had half a ceiling? i was gutted when they got rid of that ,if my mum and i were buying a birthday card in shop below i used to smell the toast or coffee and beg to go upstairs, also i used to love going to matti and tissots for the triangle toast, and rossi 's for the icecream floats and knickerbocker glories!!
