    Job advice please!

    Good morning all,

I am in desperate need of a new career. I have been driving PCVs for over fourteen years and, while I still enjoy the driving I am fed up of working for companies that treat you as part of the bus rather than a human being. I also crave a relatively normal Monday to Friday job, working sometime between the hours of 0500-1800.

I can't afford to take time off work to do a degree (for example) but I do want to do something that woild challenge me and make me use my brain more than I do already. I'm thinking of something that would give me 'on-the-job' paid training, but I really do not know what.

Any sensible suggestions would be gratefully received.

    Ta in advance.
I always favour alcohol and meaningless banter above all else in the world.

You can do a degree on a part-time basis but it does take time (I did mine in the evenings at first and then had to use all my holiday entitlement in half days for the final three years - not easy, but worth the work)! The Open University is another option but I don't know much about it - but I'm sure their website could provide you with some information. Have you thought about taking up nursing as a career - not a 9-5 job but you get paid from day 1?

Sorry Mucky, to be serious, the only one I can think of is teaching. I believe there is some kind of training you can do on the job but obviously it's not a job you could do if you didn't really want to. And I can't help but think of the Fast Show sketch - I think it was the Fast Show - where the character decides to become a teacher because they can't think of anything better to do.

It seems bloody hard trying to think of people being able to change direction in the financial situation we are in. Starting your own business in I don't know what seems to assume there are people with cash to buy what you might sell or produce but it's thinking of what people would want/need to buy that isn't already out there. Perhaps doing it better?? More cheaply?? Not sure how easy it is do something more cheaply but still make a profit. A friend who stared her own business about three years ago seems to work 24/7 for not much profit.

Good luck, I shall have more of a think.

How about a driving instructor? New drivers, new problems - should give the old grey matter a good workout on a daily basis.

Teaching is not a good idea. Firstly there are too many teacher for the jobs available, thanks to the Government pushing people into training while simultaneously reducing job vacancies by having TAs do the work. Also there is no way it is a regular hours job, despite what people may think.
I think retraining is a good option for you. Once you have decided what area you might want to go into there may also be volunteering options which you can try to see if you like the work and also get valuable experience.
    Good luck in your endeavours.

Is there any way that you could get into training working for the company you are with - driver training for example? You have a lot of experience with the company which you may be able to put to use in training up others.

Saw this earlier today if it's of any interest...

Budget hotel chain Travelodge is to create 1,000 new jobs at 41 new hotels across the UK this year.

Recruitment started today for posts including managers. receptionists, housekeepers, cleaners and bar staff at new sites including London, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Chester, Sunderland and Bradford.

Michelle Luxford, human resources director at Travelodge said: "We have an aggressive growth plan in place, which includes opening 1,100 hotels by 2025. We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated and committed individuals who want a long term career in hospitality."
    Best of luck.

Blimey, puts you off from the start really doesn't it - 'we have an aggressive growth plan' - puh leeze - why not 'we are planning to expand' or even 'we are hoping to open lots more Travelodges all being well over the next, erm....thirteen years...assuming the recession doesn't get any worse because then we will be buggered as people will not longer be able to stay in Travelodges'. Anything but 'an aggresive growth plan'!

God, I think I need to calm down and let Mucky consider this option!

I'm far too much of a coward to be a fireman. It takes a special kind of someone to want to run into a burning building, and that ain't me! I don't think I could be a policeman either - I don't deal very well with politically correct claptrap!

I've always wanted to be a teacher, chirps. I've looked into it in the past and unfortunately I would need to some a science GCSE, then an Access to Higher Education course, then a degree with a teaching qualification attached. All in all, two years of part-time study and three years of full-time. Not to mention the costs of a degree! The annoying thing is that I reckon I'd make a great teacher, and have been told the same by other people as well.

Again, this is something that I have looked into before. The training course costs around £2500, and I'd have to teach for 40 hours a week to make a decent wage, plus of course there's the travelling between lessons.

There aren't many opportunites to be honest. There are two driving instructors at my depot who have both been in the job for over ten years.

Thanks, but I worked in hotels years ago and it's not something I'm in a hurry to repeat!

I do appreciate all your suggestions, and I realise that I've poo-poohed every one of them!

Do you have an aptitude for sales?, by that I mean real sales not these "self employed commission only rackets", the problem right now is simply I have no doubt that any company needing sales people will probably be able to find people with experience and not to keen on taking on a trainee.

Good luck with whatever you decide.
