Merseyside Police can confirm a man has been charged following an incident in Hasfield Road, Norris Green in which a police officer sustained serious injuries on Saturday evening (25 November 2017).

Martin Stowell, 34, of Queens Road, Everton has been charged with:

1. Section 18 - causing grievous bodily harm with intent to resist/prevent arrest

2. Causing serious injury by dangerous driving

3. Aggravated vehicle taking - (driver did not take) and injury caused

4. Driving whilst disqualified

5. Possession of a controlled drug of Class B (cannabis/cannabis resin)

He has been remanded in custody to appear at Liverpool Magistrates Court on Monday 27 November 2017.

Merseyside Police has arrested a man after a van was driven towards a police officer in Norris Green on Saturday, 25 November 2017.

At around 7.25pm officers attempted to stop a white Transit van on Hasfield Road when it was driven onto the pavement and was in collision with the police vehicle and other parked vehicles, before being driven towards an officer who was on foot.

The male officer sustained serious injuries and has been taken to hospital for further treatment. He remains in a stable condition in hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries to his chest and leg. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

A 34-year-old man, from Everton, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, possession of a controlled drug (cannabis) and driving while under the influence of drink or drugs. He was taken to a police station in Merseyside to be interviewed.

A road closure remains in place on Hasfield Road and house to house enquiries are being carried out. CCTV opportunities are also being explored.

Detective Chief Inspector Martin Earl said: “This was a despicable attack on a police officer who was simply doing his job, trying to protect the communities of Merseyside.

“The officer has sustained serious injuries for which he is receiving treatment. He has also been left extremely shaken by his ordeal.

“His colleagues, both those who were with him at the time and others who attended following the incident, have been left shocked by this incident and are being provided with support.

“I would urge anyone with information about this incident, or who may have been passing Hasfield Road in their vehicle at the time and may have dashcam footage, to contact police. Any information could prove vital to our enquiries.”
