    Wignall of Ormskirk

I have a grandfather clock made by John Wignall of Ormskirk.
It it claimed that it has been in my family since the early 1800s and was originally a wedding gift. 28 hour movement (?) and painted dial. Moon phases and seconds hand. Single weight on chain. It has a number painted on the movement (I think I remember 247). Where do I turn to find more about the maker and the clock? Can you helpme?

Derek H......Wignall is one of the common clockmakers from Ormskirk.

Your Clock will be a 30 hour.

The face normally has a flower painted on each corner of the face. The case is normally a very square hood with two strait collums. Oak and cross banded in mahogany.

Worth about the £1500 to £1800 mark

If it was an 8 day (having 2 key holes on the face ) it would be worth £2500 to £2750

If you bring a picture of it in to the shop I will be able to tell you more

    all the best
    John

It has two keyholes in the face but it's still only runs for a bit more than a day. Bit difficult to come into yours shop as I live in Norway. What I'll do is take some pictures and send them on this thread. Thanks for your help. It will never be sold (if I have any say in the matter), but will be passed on to further "Norwegian" Howards. What is fun is that the moon -phase dial has two scenes, one a landscapte scene and one a sailship scene - and the sailship is flying the Norwegian flag. The flag didn't exist when the clock was made - so the painter's fantasy proved to be fate one can say.

Some of the facts do not add up.

    single weight chain....two key holes
This looks like the face plate has been changed or the holes have been drilled to kid some one.

The rolling moon dial is unusual on a Wignall clock

Is the top of the clock flat or what we call a swan neck pediment. May be it would be best if you post a photograph on the thread.

    The painted flag is suspicious.

I have just received an email from some one wanting me to value a Wignall of Ormskirk clock

I remember this thread from Oct 07...........

    Reprice of the clock

    NOW NOV 2010

Long case clock prices have dropped

a 30 hour would struggle to get £400 in auction

and an 8 day would struggle to get £800

A clock made by Wignall would do better in a local to Ormskirk auction room than on in say Scotland.

but to get anywhere near to £1500 for a Wignall in today's market would be impossible at auction.
