Can you guess the hammer price?

    Posted - Nov 04 2010 : 13:18:06
    Hi.

Just by way of variety. I am going to be attending a sale shortly. There is an oil painting which has been described as a study of a king charles spaniel, which has been signed: John R Hobart and dated: 1836.

As you can hopefully see from the image provided this work has seen better days. It has significant losses, holes and tears.

However, it appears to be a well painted oil of a good commercial subject which appears to be painted by a listed Georgian / Victorian artist.

It is in a provincial sale room. Can anybody hazard a guess of what they think the hammer price will be? Let's see who can estimate the most accurately.

    Regards.

    Hi Advance

You would imagine going by the condition that the painting would bring under £50

But the subject (King Charles Spaniel) is very interesting, so that would put the painting into the £200-£300 bracket.

It is a provincial auction so a painting like this will go for more than at a main specialty sale, say in the heart of London. Reason being.......... in a Provincial sale this painting may be one of the star lots, when in a main sale room the painting is just another painting.

Now for the artist John R Hobart 1836.

in my reference library. I find no reference.
Also in Bryans Dictionary of Painters and Engravers Vol lll 1902 edition, no reference.

This means that between the beginning and the end of the 19th century he was not rated or not discovered

My auction data does show his work. Last year a painting of a dog did not sell....I see why......... it was a dog of a painting. His horses are no better. I am sorry I do not rate him.

BUT.......the painting you have posted I find very interesting. May be the King Charles Spaniel was his own dog so he put more of his heart into the painting. The painting has an oriental look to me and may attract an Asian buyer.

I would put an estimate between £120 to £180. but if it went for £360 I would not be surprised. But if the condition is a lot worse than I envisage £80 - £100.

keep us informed of the hammer price

OK Vanny. Interesting perspective with regard to the dog possibly being the owners pet.

Anybody else brave enough to bark out a price? Be quick, because the sale is coming up shortly! Good luck (No prizes offered!)

Vanny, your point on it perhaps selling for a greater price as it could be the best of a bad bunch could be correct, we will see! I wonder if it will go walkies out of the saleroom. Will anybody take the bait? (Or in this case, bone).

If it was my painting, I would be happy with briana5125 value of £130.

But if I had owned it I would have bought it for below £50

    or not owned it.

    the painting is not bad.

not something i would buy though.

    too much damage

just imagine trying to sell the item honestly when restored.

seller - "item has had a little restoration"

buyer - " how much restoration ? could you point it out for me"

    seller - " gulp well "

    redwine... welcome

I look at antiques as art.

Art looks great in the right place.

in the wrong place ..... it looks awful.

This painting would look great on a thin pillared wall in a very modern house.
please note it is theantiquesman account on qlocal that is now only used, thank you

Vanny, I am unsure if it is the artists pet. Possibly he was just trying to get commissions to produce subjects which he knew he could paint and this just happened to be one of them? I have left a bid, we can see how I get on!

The artist (1828-1858) has had a few pictures sold at Bonhams. Seems to paint Horses and Dogs. My guess is £440
