Southport journalist Martin Hovden writes: More than 500 migrants crossed the English Channel today, seeking asylum in the UK.

And according to the BBC, an estimated 17,000 have made the journey so far this year - double the number in 2020.

Imagine that number arriving on Southport beach. How would local services cope with 17,000 people? Do we have enough homes for them? And what about our local schools and health service? Will they be able to cope?

According to GB News, many of the lifeboats along the south coast called out to help the migrants are manned by volunteers. And they are going out several times a day. Selfless action to be applauded, but it is having an impact on their full-time jobs.

Apparently, migrants are told by the traffickers to dial 999 when they reach English waters and ask to be rescued.

All very important issues whatever your view which should be analysed and discussed in our national media.

    But they’re not.

As GB News presenter Nigel Farage pointed out on his show, none of the national broadcast media or national newspapers are covering the crisis on the south coast.

Or as one viewer said, the national media are giving more attention to the situation on the Poland/Belarus border than the daily influx of migrants across the Channel.

What is going on in the Channel every day is news. It should be reported.

Here we go again...First off, Martin Hovden is not a 'journalist' - he's a retired bitter old man whose opinions or right wing views have no greater weight than anyone else's. Why do QLocal keep giving him a platform and airing his views in this way?Secondly, like any other country we have a legal obligation to rescue people in difficulty within our waters. Is Martin suggesting we should just turn a blind eye and let people drown to death, and contravene international law? Finally, I thought QLocal was supposed to be a local news website? Airing somebody's views on an issue like this is not 'news' (neither are blatant adverts for Lancashire Auto's 'Car Of The Week'), nor is it relevant to our area. If I want right wing views on migration, I'd tune into GB News to watch Martin's poster-boy Farage spouting his hatred. And as I've said before, are the companies who advertise on here (Amazon, Rufford Vetinary Group, Lancashire Auto etc) happy to be associated with this kind of rubbish?

A failed ‘journalist’ talking about a failed politician on a failed ‘news’ channel. I gave up reading the drivel half way through.
Who cares about numbers? We’re a rich nation, we should be welcoming them with empathy and open arms.

Claims media silence but quotes national media reports.

    .
No, Southport wouldn't cope, it wouldn't have to as refugees are dispersed all over the country rather than accommodated in the town they land in.

17,000 dispersed amongst a population of 60,000,000 is a tiny insignificance.

Media silence ? The exact numbers of migrants arriving by sea was a Radio 4 headline this morning. There isn't media silence, they are full of it.

I think GB News would find it cheaper to communicate if it just rang its viewers up rather than had the expense of broadcasting.
