Southport journalist Martin Hovden writes: The shock revelation today that Labour lied about an event where leader Sir Keir Starmer is alleged to have broken lockdown rules will send shockwaves among candidates standing in next week's council elections.

The Tories were already braced for losses because of Boris Johnson's fine for attending a Downing Street party at the height of Covid restrictions.

Now Labour has been thrown into disarray after the Daily Mail revealed deputy leader Angela Rayner was present at the Keir Starmer event in April last year, after denying her presence for months.

“Previous denials were an honest mistake,” a Labour source told the newspaper.

Understandably, the public are now likely to conclude “they were all at it”.

The Partygate scandal is - in theory - a gift for the Liberal Democrats in Southport, now their Tory and Labour opponents are on the ropes.

Next Thursday's Sefton Council election will be an opportunity for voters to decide if they want to punish political parties involved in the Covid row.

Polling stations are open from 7am to 10pm on Thursday, May 5.

    Don't waste your vote.

For the umpteenth time, Martin Hovden is NOT a journalist. He's just a bitter, angry old man whose right-wing views are given a platform on here just because he's old mates with the guys ('Editor' and Roger Blaxall) who run QLocal. But wait - he's quoting that fine bastion of balanced journalism - the Daily Mail! To in any way compare Keir Starter having one beer with what was a pattern of organised illegal parties within government (Boris's birthday gathering, the 'bring your own booze' party, farewell parties for departing staff, and the infamous cheese and wine event in the Downing Street garden to name but a few) are classic distraction tactics from this pathetic government and their mouthpieces in the right-wing press.

Blimey, that's a bit touchy, of course, it's the same why go through this nonsense of denying it.

Keir didn't need to be there, Angela didn't need to be there, they addressed the "troops" on "zoom" anyway.

Then there is who else was there, one interesting name has come up.

And to say they forgot Angela was there until faced with a video was just a plain daft lie.

The Labour Party is hoisted by its own petard.

At least Boris was in his workplace and home.

Even for a failed journalist this article scrapes the bottom of the barrel try to smearing Labour with the same odious behaviour that typifies the Tory Party, or should that be Parties, as they do nothing else

As I understand it, the police looked into this campaigning event and decided no rules were broken - until that changes it matters not a jot if Angela Rayner was there.

Conservatives are falling over themselves to make a false equivalence. Boris and chums had REPEATED parties and have been found to have broken the law.

Until anything material changes this currently just looks like a lot of Conservative media trying to whip something up to deflect from the amount of doo-dah that their golden boy is currently sitting under and deflect from both Partygate and the Conservative Cost of Living Crisis.

Yes your right there not the same Labours was much worse they didn't have any need to be there and it wasn't their workplace, the campaigning was done on line.

Which is why they lied when asked if Angela was there she of course had no need to be there.

And when you see who else was there it's no wonder.

Why don't they take the moral high ground and admit it.?

No honest person would defend them the dishonest will try and deflect.

Silly response which makes little no sense...
How can one incident which the police have looked into and decided there's no further action equate with LOADS of incidents by Johnson and his chums which were looked into and have resulted in criminal acts and fines?! Plus, it ain't over on that score yet as there's more to follow?!!
EDIT.. and the Daily Fail's latest attempt to jack this story up further has been exposed as they have used a picture from 2015 of Starmer having a curry to mislead readers... it's not journalism, it's misinformation black-ops
