The daughter of Liverpool sporting legend Tommy Smith united with thousands of people also walking for someone with dementia at Alzheimer’s Society’s Liverpool Memory Walk at Aintree Racecourse on Sunday 29 September.

Janette Simpson was left devastated and the world of football was sent into mourning in April this year when Smith passed away from dementia at the age of 74 – four decades after securing his place in Liverpool folklore when he scored in a famous 3-1 win over Borussia Moenchengladbach in the 1977 European Cup final.

Janette, who lost both her mother and celebrated father to dementia, decided to take on the Liverpool Memory Walk in memory of them both.

Speaking about the Liverpool Memory Walk, Janette said: “This is the first year I’ve taken part in Alzheimer’s Society’s Memory Walk. I’m so proud to have joined thousands of other people in Liverpool to raise awareness of dementia. It really was quite an emotional but inspiring day!

‘Sadly, I know what a cruel disease Alzheimer’s can be because it affected both my parents and that’s why I wanted to come along to support the walk today to help Alzheimer’s Society find a cure.

“It was clear to see from the event today just how many other people have been affected by dementia, which is why it’s so important to take part in fundraising events like Memory Walk.

If you couldn’t make it down to Aintree this weekend there are plenty of other walks you can sign up for in the North West like Cheshire on 12 October, so go to memorywalk.org.uk to get involved.”

Steve Green Area Manager for Alzheimer’s Society in Merseyside said: “Families like Janette’s are being cruelly torn apart by dementia, and we urgently need more funding to help us find a cure so others no longer have to face its heart-breaking impact.

‘Dementia is now the UK’s biggest killer with someone developing it every three minutes - yet dementia research still trails far behind other health conditions, after decades of underfunding.

‘Until the day we beat dementia our researchers are working tirelessly to find ways to make quality of life better for people living with dementia in the UK and their carers too.

‘Every penny raised through Memory Walk will help Alzheimer’s Society find a cure, improve care and provide care and support to people affected by dementia – register now at memorywalk.org.uk

In the UK someone develops dementia every three minutes and across Liverpool there are 4,822 people over the age of 65 living with the condition.

Dementia devastates lives. Research shows that 850,000 people in the UK have a form of dementia. By 2021, 1 million people will be living with the condition. This will soar to two million by 2051. Alzheimer's Society is committed to spending at least £150 million over the next decade on dementia research to improve care for people today and find a cure for tomorrow.

It’s not too late to take part in Memory Walk this year, the next closest walk will be Cheshire Memory Walk on 12 October, or supporters can sign up to create their own walk with Your Walk, Yor Way.
