    Staffordshire Toby Jug

    Hi Vanman,

I have this (Duke of Wellington, I think) Toby Jug which has been passed down in my family. It is presently with my son in Hesketh Bank and he does not care for it particularly. I am considering either having one of my family bring it over or selling it. Can you give me some idea how much you would give for this if my son brought it into your shop please? If you are not interested, could you give me an idea how much it would likely fetch on Ebay?

    Thank you,

    John.

Hi Wilky............what you have looks quite interesting, but it is NOT a TOBY JUG, it is a character jug.

The difference is on a toby jug you see the whole body including the feet.

On a character jug you only see the head and shoulders.

The face looks late Georgian and he is in uniform.
Wellington items tend to be Circa 1828 to 1830.....This was when he was at the height of his fame. Prime Minister etc. Some items where made earlier circa 1805 after his return from India and circa 1815 after the Waterloo campaign

nice cobalt blue colour may make it nearer mid 19th century..........

you do not mention the size.

Over the last 20 years a lot on copies have been made.

An Item like this would be made of pottery not china and would be made in the Staffordshire Potteries.

I would like to see the item and look at the base. That can in fact tell you more than looking at the jug.

If it is 1st Duke of Wellington (Arthur Wellesley) and has no chips, no cracks and no restorations and not reproduction, (hard to tell from a photograph with out seeing the base.)
In a collectors auction sale you may get over £150 but remember £30 you may have to pay in commission, £30 for a photograph and you may be charged a listing fee + insurance

you may end up with £80 that is if the jug is of reasonable size.

On eBay.........buyers would be weary that the item is reproduction or may be restored...........May be £30 to £40 on eBay.

Bring it in and let me see it I will be able to advise you better

    all the best

Thank you, I will get him to bring it in to your shop. He has my permission to sell it to you if you can make a reasonable offer. He will let you know who he is when he comes in.

    cheers,

    Wilky.
