    old religous painting please help,,,,,

hello, i have an old religious painting here that i am looking to find a few things out about...

well its a religious painting as you can see, very dirty, the medium looks to be somewhere inbetween oil and watercolour, maybe acrylic?,,,,,unsigned,,,,,but very good quality, it needs a little bit of restoration.....

the interesting thing about the picture is as most oil based paintings mounted onto a wooden structure to keep it wrinkling up but this picture has a nickel back to it ( a full sheet of nickel covering the whole back of the painting and is nailed on by old style nails) 9 the nails look hand made)

i would say by looking at it its maybe 200 years old...

can anyone help with an age, artist???(wishful thinking) and a value .....many thanks...

Ufortunetly, I do not know anything about the item but if it is good quality and 200 years old my fair obvious guess, if it is original, it should be worth quite a bit...

Looks interesting mate, do you mind me asking how you came across it and if you paid for it, if so how much?

    Advanced.

just another cheap car boot find, its just luck of the draw, it was about £5, if you go to car boots or antique fair type of places try and be the one of the first there, also get to know other people in the trade , you might want to go aroung charity shops or antique shops and get chatting to people,,,its all about contacts for buying and selling..

    This could be a winner.

Take it to a major auction house Immediately

It may be an oily graph but on the other hand.

It is one of the stations of the cross.

Each Roman Catholic Church would have 14 (I think) paintings or wood carvings, even marble carved plaques of 14 scenes of Jesus last days your looks like an offer to carry His cross. From meeting Judas, His sentencing, to His death.

Quite interesting and if painted well an 18th century painting could bring £7000.

Japan and China like items like this.

Oily-graph is a posh name for a colour print on canvas.

Some people stick them onto an old canvas and try to pass it of as an oil painting

i sent an email with pics to sotherbys, christies and a religious antique dealer, i have had no reply yet from christies and sotherbys but the religious antique dealer said that its probably victorian and with no signature of the artist its probably worth £50-£100 , this could be true but sounds like a cop out to me..

If it is an oil painting I would pay 3 times that figure.

    Victorian is probably right.

    £50 - £100 is totally wrong.

By the way signature does not make any difference for a Station of the Cross. I would bet none would be signed. All copied from A MASTER housed in the Vatican

If you new the church it came from .... That would make a difference to the price.

dont understand what you mean by a chain of posters, its coming from northern ireland which is still the u.k, i could send it special delivery, or i could send it with parcelforce,, either way it will be wrapped well in bubble wrap....do you have any ideas...?

then you can look at it and make a judgment whether its good enough for your client....
