The lastest data on the governemnt covid dashboard indicate in the last seven days over the previous seven days in England:

  • People tested positive UP 33.9%
  • Deaths with a positive test UP 27.8%
  • Patients admitted in England UP 39.5%

Coronavirus cases have increased sharply in recent weeks, with the latest figures showing 1.7 million people testing positive across the UK. The increase is being driven by the recent BA.4 and BA.5 variants, subvariants of Omicron.

Professor Tim Spector, of the ZOE Covid symptom study app, said the fifth wave of coronavirus has already started. “We’re in a wave at the moment,” he said, “heading towards a quarter of a million cases a day, that’s a wave already.”

Pop up testing stations and free lateral flow tests ended at the end of March 2022.

A summer wave will continue to put pressure on an already stretched NHS.

There appears no new advice from the Government whilst other countries are warning of new restrictions may be nexcessary. Germany's health minister on Friday recommended that Germans should still wear masks in indoor public places, although this would be on a voluntary basis for the time being.
