Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson has suspended his deputy, Councillor Lynn Hinnigan over blatant breaches of COVID lockdown guidance following an internal Labour Party investigation. And he has apologised to residents of Merseyside for the terrible example his Cabinet have set.

Thousands of locked down Merseyside residents who saw photos of Ms Hinnigan and fellow Labour Cabinet Member Barry Kushner gallivanting around in busy garden parties at their homes clearly took this as an extra 'green light' to behave how they like and flocked to Southport and Formby beaches over the last weekend. Ms Hinnigan initially tried to pass off her 50th birthday Party as 'just people dropping off presents, but the published photos showed otherwise.

Joe Anderson said: "As Mayor, I have made regular pleas for people to follow the guidelines to protect both their own health and the health of others. Never before is there a greater need to be considerate of how our actions will impact on the health of others, regardless of how hard it is.Therefore, at a time when the population is expected to follow those guidelines, I expect members of the council, and in particular members of my Labour group, to show leadership in their communities."

"This crisis is not over and we all should stick by the rules - and I mean all of us."

Explaining that Councillor Hinnigan has joined Cllr Kushner tin being suspended without pay for two months, he said: "I would like to offer my sincere apologies for their actions."

A Politician telling lies to save her own skin, now there’s a novelty.

Isn't it rich - an aide to the Conservative party digresses and the howls of protest and calls for resignation/sacking are deafening.

Compare the reaction to a locally prominent Labour deputy mayor and the silence is equally deafening.

Given what we are told about Cummins' limited contact with others during the ill fated Durham Dash, I would argue that this 'dropping off presents' outing posed a greater threat to public health.

Yet again we see the political elite setting double standards with little or no reproach.
Will we see placard waving numpties harassing and intimidating the deputy mayor outside her home ?
I somehow doubt that very much and, hope that we do not see that type of reprehensible gathering again outside any family home.

I presumed this was more Lib Demmery “community contributions” as they love using the term “big joe” and Cllr Dawson particularly likes sporadic inclusions of inverted commas like ‘big joe’ and ‘green light’ In this instance there’s probably not much they can complain about on what he’s done even if they were councillors relevant to Sefton as he’s suspended them and whilst investigation is carried out. There is however in the contrary no evidence of Local Lib Dem leadership ever holding their councillors to account to behave as they should for the good of the electorate, perhaps this is one if the reasons there is no Southport Area Committee as they treated it as their own gladiatorium given it’s the only place they had a chance of being relevant.

Was surprised that it turns out Cllr Hinnigan used to be a Lib Dem

Probably because in this case disciplinary action was taken, unlike the evasion, lies and twisted truth over Cummings, if Cummings had been shown the door there would have been nothing further.

Shows rather more integrity from local politicians than national.

I do wish everyone would follow the lockdown rules - it is so much more satisfying when people stay at home. I can speed around the roads in my car, enjoy lovely peaceful walks in the virus killing sunshine, breathing in clean fresh air, and do almost all I please without having to excuse myself to anyone. People are so selfish these days, ignoring those rules!
