    a couple of new items

    hey john hows america?

i have picked up a couple of bits here that i would like your opinion on..

number 1 = is an italian vase , stamped to base 'h.o italy' ( the pictures make it look brighter than it actually is)

number 2 = is a cobalt blue vase with a thin strip of applied brass round the neck and base,,stamped to base ' safi' i think its moroccan,,

both items could be modern but i'm not sure..

    thanks

I am in the Southern States. in a town called Roswell

    ver hot.

    your vases are not antique.
The colourfull vase is worth under 10 pounds........(no pound sign on key board) probably bought by a tourist and brought back to England. Not older than 1960

and the blue vase may be a little more in cash but again it is not old. May be 1970/80

    Good luck

    thanks john..

oh by the way i have a contact who has a collection of old american railway documents and is looking to sell...

the documents date from between 1860 and 1890

i need to have a good look through them first but the collection consists of hand written documents signed by people conected with the railways in america at the time.

over 60 railway maps and old documents i.e the investigation of railway manegment 1979 etc and many more..

amazing stuff he has quite a bit of it too,

some of the railways documented are

.the new york, lake erie and western railway company

    .texas and pacific railroad company

    .atlantic and great western railroad

    .pennsylvania railroad company

i have added a few photo's of the photocopy's i got of him for you to look at.

i understand you wont be able to value the collection from what i have here but just a general vibe would be great
thanks john and enjoy the rest of your trip.

Vanman--don't let the aliens (UFO type) get you! It's hot here in Texas, too--over 32c.

Brianna, I bet if you googled the names of any of the railroads you've listed, you could find more info and/or people interested--railroad history buffs--probably a lot of them here. Good luck...

thanks vivra ,,, how are things in texas? antiques are hugh in america i believe.

i have an uncle in canada and i went to visit him a few years ago and he took me round a few antique markets, i was suprised how many english antiques are over there .

i was even more suprised when my uncles wife told me she had a house full of antiques and when i got there it was full of modern re-production..

with all the antique markets in canada i couldnt understand why she bought only re-pro items ...

i guess the term antiques refers to a style in the states/canada

I hope your taste is better than your spelling Briana, oh yeah it is you purchased an item from me.

Glad to hear you have having a fun time in the States Vanny, is it for business or pleasure and or a bit of both? On another note, are you going to be participating in any more Dickinson Real Deal shows in the future, I always find them great fun to watch, and in a way it is kind of ironic to see a dealer vs a dealer and not a dealer vs the public.

Although public say they don't know what they what for an item but some how they know what it is worth? I never did figure that one out.

How would you feel facing and dealing with Mike Melody?

To be fair, I am finding quantities of people from USA are consistently purchasing from me in the United Kingdom, even though they have to pay the extra shipping fee's, the fee's to clear the items from customs and tax... Antiques are very strong in the USA, well they are for my specialist area, saying that I do of course get UK clients but it amazes me why people from USA, don't just purchase items from auction houses in the USA, it is not like they are un fair or too strong prices in my opinions, just check out : www.liveauctioneers.com/ for example...

Briana, in this part of the states just about every other shop in every other town is an "antique" shop! They advertise "new shipments from the UK every month" etc. I often think there can't be any antiques left in Britain by now, they've all been sent over here.

One place had an old washstand (with marble top and a tile back splash)--it was labeled as an antique kitchen cabinet for $450. I mentioned to the owner of the antique mall that it was actually a wash stand, she said she knew, but the owner of the piece "wouldn't be told."

A lot of the stuff in most of the shops is junk. Items of furniture from the 30's and 40's, things my family would not have had in the house to begin with! And certainly not antique.

A lot of the things are merely "collectibles" and not antiques.

I was looking for a pair of traditional Staffordshire dogs--found a single (from a split pair) for over $500.

    Briana--my grandaughter's name is Riana!

    :O Forgot the comma....

Vivra, did the washstand even have enough age to be classified as Vintage? Just remember an item which is classed 'antique' usually refers to an item with around 100 years of age. Maybe you could get Vanny to phone them, and to do his trade description act to them, if he could add the MuseumofWales to the list that would even more ideal!

Advanced--yes the washstand was old enough. Unfortunately the antique "mall" closed down and I don't know where the washstand ended up!

There is a small town close to us that labels itself as "The Antiques Capital of the World"--all the shops in the town center are antique shops! America has a lot of "World Capitals"--Tyler (another town close by) is the "Rose Capital of the World" for instance. The baseball "World Series" only has American teams, is another example.

As for the Staffordshire dog, I thought it was terrible that they would split pairs and sell each one separately. My daughter bought me a pair for my birthday--she thought it was a pair, had them wrapped and presented them to me; when I opened the present, both dogs wre facing the same way!

in fairness two staffordshire dogs is still a pair just not a correct set.

maybe you should pass some of your knowledge onto them shops,,,

It would be like sending Blackpool F.C. to play Everton at Goodison Park.

I have known Mike a Blackpool fan and his wife Margaret and his children since Windsford Market days in 1976.

Very respected dealer.....Trustworthy and very honest.

He would do anything for you.......

Including eating the roses on the dinning table at the Prince of Wales Hotel Southport in a deal to get out of paying the bill.
