The two flyovers, which connect Lime Street to Dale Street and Tithebarn Street, will be taken down using a unique process designed to minimise vibrations and protect the art and cultural collections housed in the nearby World Museum Liverpool, Walker Art Gallery and Central Library. The work is being carried out by our contractors Amey and Graham at a cost of £6.75m.

The scheme will be split into two phases:

  • Phase 1 - dismantling of three footbridges that sit underneath the two flyovers. This phase will begin on 2nd September 2019 and will result in Byrom Street and Hunter Street being closed over a series of weekends. A pedestrian diversion route will take people via Dale Street and Hatton Garden to Great Crosshall Street back to the LJMU campus. Alternatively, people can walk up William Brown Street and across Lime Street to Hunter Street. View the alternative route for pedestrians.

  • Phase 2 - removal of the flyovers. This phase will begin on 21st September and will involve heavy machinery cutting out 6 metre long sections of the flyovers at time. As a result, Fontenoy Street will be closed from 9th September to 14th October 2019, and Byrom Street, Hunter Street, Queensway Tunnel and the Dale Street to Crosshall Street junction will be closed over a series of weekends through to mid December. Cuerden Street behind the major cultural buildings will also be closed for one month from 11th November to 20th December.
