If we do not teach the next generation our skills, as a nation we are lost.
Apprenticeships where abolished and look where it got us.
Now apprenticeships are on there way back.
So Advanced and briana I look as my apprentices
It is a shame they do not have any money and go into buying real antiques, but that will come in time.
Vivra Patricia, in many ways you are right and I must agree with most of what you have said.
But this is an open forum so any one can ask questions on what they think antiques are. I know you and me know 100 years refers to antiques so we will give the apprentices a little more time to realise that the car boot sale and the antique shop are as opposite ends of the scale as McDonalds and the Savoy Restaurant in food. Thanks for haveing your say. Say hi to all in the states.
very true vanny, its o.k buying real antiques and collectables but you have got to have local outlets for them unless you have a bottomless pit of cash,,,,for example in derry (northern ireland ) where i live there is 1 antique shop which i think is half full of reproduction and vastly overpriced for the stock they are selling,,,how am i supposed to learn from that,,,,thats why vanny's forum is so good for me,,,,thanks again vanny ,,,just wish there were more posts of real antiques from southport..
Hi Vanman, Advanced, and Brianna--okay, I see your point(s)--and by the way I lived in Southport for a heck of a lot longer than a one day/night visit--a long time ago, but still...
They have the same "dealing" goes on over here--swap meets, garage sales, etc. People visit all of them, pick up junk with the express purpose of holding their own "sale" and re-selling everything. One can visit several one weekend then go around them the following week and see the same stuff on a different booth.
As for genuine antiques, dozens of "antique shops" here boast that they have received a "recent shipment of antiques from the UK"--my question to them would be, since they (just about all of the many) have been boasting about this for years, surely the UK must have run out of genuine antiques for the American antique trade to buy!
Vanman (Antiquesman?) if you are ever in my neck of the woods (north east Texas between Dallas and the Louisiana border) you have an open invitation to visit us (come to the house and sign our "little black book")
We are close to Gladewater, a town that bills itself as "The Antique Capital of the World") The whole of the downtown area is nothing but Antique/junk shops (all of them advertising the recent shipments from the UK I mention above.
Advanced, Brianna, keep on with your apprenticeship--I will continue to read your posts with interst--good luck.
thanks vivra, just a learning curve, but this is what i want to do for a career, thats why i need as much knowledge and help as possible,.....only joking about the southport thing.....
