Should Liverpool Football Club win the Champions League Final in Madrid, Liverpool City Council will formally invite the club to take part in a victory parade through the city the following day – Sunday, 2 June.
Given that we will only know who are the new Champions of Europe late on Saturday night there are major logistical challenges in the planning of a parade of this scale, but the city wants to ensure that if the team bring the Champions League Cup home on Sunday they want to be able to share that special moment with the public of Liverpool.
The City Council, who is leading on the event, has been working with a host of partners including Merseyside Police to ensure that if Liverpool win on Saturday those who want to welcome the team home can do so safely.
Planning for the event has been rigorous as the homecoming will be taking place on the weekend of the Mersey River Festival and the Bordeaux Wine Festival - which are expected to attract tens of thousands of people to the waterfront.
The parade is due to start at 4pm , is expected to last for a couple of hours, and will see the Liverpool team parade the Champions League trophy on an open top bus.
The route starts at Allerton Maze and will travel north bound on Queens Drive towards the Fiveways roundabout and Rocket flyover. From there it will journey along:
    Queens Drive
    • Mill Bank
    • West Derby Road
    • Islington
    • Leeds Street
    • The Strand
    • Route finishes at Blundell Street
The Mersey River Festival and Bordeaux Wine Festival events are due to finish at 4pm on Sunday to accommodate the parade. The parade is expected to attract tens of thousands of people, so the city council has key advice for fans:
Line the full length of the route. There will be no central focal point to the parade
    • Decide which part of the route you want to wait at and arrive in plenty of time
    • Be patient – it is impossible to predict how long it will take the team bus to travel along the route
    • Due to the number of people coming in to and out of the city, there will be significant demands on public transport, with queuing likely
Motorists are advised that the city centre is expected to be extremely busy, with this in mind they should plan their journeys in and out of the city carefully.
Superintendent Mark Wiggins said: “Should the parade take place we would expect a large number of people to gather along the route. We will be supporting Liverpool City Council, who are organising the event, with the running and policing on the day to ensure the event goes ahead safely and disruption to regular road users and people living and visiting the city is minimal.“Officers will be on hand on Sunday afternoon to provide a reassuring presence and making sure the day is not only one to remember, but also an enjoyable and safe event for all those attending the parade.
“Rolling road closures will be put in place to accommodate the parade and although we will work with Liverpool City Council to keep disruption to a minimum, some traffic disruption is inevitable and we would ask motorists to be patient, or avoid the area of parade route if possible.
“If you have plans already for Sunday (27th May) or are going to be driving in and out of the area, I would ask you to make yourselves aware of which roads will be affected so you can fully prepare, make alternative travel arrangements in advance, or use available public transport wherever possible.
“We wish Liverpool every success and are proud of their achievements this season whatever the outcome.”
The gathering of crowds along the route will cause disruption to the transport network, both in the period up to the start of the parade, during it and afterwards as services work to get back to normal.
In addition, Sunday service provision, with some engineering works on the rail network, will mean that the transport network is extremely busy.
    Key advice
We want you to have a brilliant time. Please plan your travel in advance to ensure you can get where you’re going to go and home again.
    • Use public transport wherever possible, but consider that trains and buses will be running to a Sunday timetable with some rail services affected by engineering works, and road closures for the parade disrupting bus services. Check before you travel.
    • If you live along, or close, to the parade route, stay local and walk or cycle. This may give you the best vantage point and means you can avoid a busy transport network.
    • The open top bus won’t be stopping so take advantage of the full length of the route.
    • Decide which part of the route you want to wait at and arrive in plenty of time.
    • The transport network will be very busy. Prepare to queue and factor this in. Don’t aim for the last service home.
    • Be patient – it is impossible to predict how long it will take the team bus to travel along the route. This will also impact on when road closures will be lifted and when affected bus routes can get back to normal.
    • On the Sunday there will be some Merseyrail station closures in the city centre and on the Wirral line due to the crowds expected. Some of these will be in place irrespective of whether the parade goes ahead or not.
    • On the Sunday, should the parade take place, Mersey Ferries will be running a shuttle service from 3pm, with the last service back to Seacombe at 7.40pm
‘Live’ travel information will also be available via Twitter @merseytravel or #lfcparadeBy Rail
    Saturday - Merseyrail

    • Green Lane
    • Bromborough Rake
    • Capenhurst

Northern line trains will call at Moorfields only and Wirral line trains will call at Liverpool Central only. These changes will still apply if no parade takes place. However Northern and Wirral line services will call at both Liverpool Central and Moorfields stations in the city centre.

Travellers should check National Rail Enquiries for the most up to date information.
    Bus
    Saturday
Services as timetabled, though disruption possible in the city centre should crowds congregate on street.

NB: Industrial action will affect some services from 1800 operated by Stagecoach Lancashire- 2 (Southport to Preston) and the X2 (Liverpool to Preston).
    Sunday
Bus services in and out of the city centre and those that cross the parade route will be significantly impacted by road closures and diversions. How long it takes the team bus to travel the route will determine when road closures can be lifted and services can get back to normal.

Arriva and Stagecoach apps will show any delays to services. Live Service information will be available via Twitter @Merseytravel @arrivanorthwest @StagecoachMCSL.

    Mersey Tunnels
    Saturday
    No planned closures.

    Sunday
The parade is planned to pass close to both the Wallasey (Kingsway) and Birkenhead (Queensway) entrances and exits in Liverpool. This may mean temporary closures of the tunnels until traffic is safe to enter and exit again. It is difficult to predict the time and duration of any closures as they will be affected by how long it takes the team bus to travel the route.
From 9am there will be no right turn onto the Strand from the Dock Branch exit of Birkenhead (Queensway)Tunnel and the exit will be closed in the afternoon as the Strand will be closed. The exact times are difficult to predict but this could happen as early as 2pm.

As well as cars and other vehicles, any closures will also affect the running of cross-river bus services.
For ‘live’ tunnels information visit @Merseytravel on Twitter.
    Mersey Ferries
If you live in Wirral, you may also want to consider the ferry as an alternative to get to and from Liverpool. 400 free car parking spaces are available at Seacombe.

    Sunday
River Explorer Cruises will run with the last departure from Liverpool at 14.00 calling at Seacombe and Woodside.

From 15.00 a cross-river service will operate between Liverpool and Seacombe around every 20 minutes. The last boat will leave Pier Head at 19.30.
