Are some local councillors living in an alternative universe, and not the real world?
An angry local shopkeeper thinks so - issuing this classic quotation when chatting to QLocal's Roger Blaxall about trade on Burscough St.
One business there - Bayferns coffee shop - never re-opened after Christmas and lasted all of eight weeks in the former Jospice shop with the Borough Council its landlord (a council PR officer said it was too commercially sensitive to discuss the matter) but the owner was believed to be losing an incredible £200 a day.
Peony home furnishings is leaving on Valentine's Day - although there won't be much love lost with the expensive rates the owner's been paying; and Blaxall has learnt that the future of another four could be in doubt including Ba Ba Ji, the Indian bar that's not opened in the last few weeks, Shake It Up, on the market for the last few months, Express Sandwiches which has a poignant 'No Milk Today' type sign in its front window and - sadly - Timpsons which has been a fixture of the town (along with its manager Burt Jones) since Adam was a lad.
That's yet to be confirmed but it would make sense with Timpson's also running a branch in Morrison's supermarket a five minute walk away.
With such a grim outlook for just ONE street in Ormskirk perhaps those councillors do need a 'kick up the jacksy' if only to bring them into the real retail world although they alone can't influence how retail trends have changed over the last few years.
Added the lady: "I keep hearing about Ormskirk's booming night time economy which is all well and good but I'm open in the day time.
"I'm doing well with my online shop but it's sad to see the town centre so quiet."

most of the buildings were bought by the council a few years ago to make them more affordable having lewased one myself i find it hard to belive that the rents were dearer under previous owners as they are quite costly and thats without a service charge which you dont seem to get much for your money 3 bins between 5 units and we cant use them for glkass so provide our own ? also the street looks untidy and unkept but i guess its not moor street is it which seems to get all the attention in the town centre ?. the lighting is very poor towards church walk side which makes it hard for people to see anywhere past church walks , i also know of a few more units that may be going shortly in the local area , the problem for most places is that shoppers are very few on the ground because of a lack of variety do we really need 14 coffee shops ? or a wetherspoons which is 5 times the size of any bar in the town which hurt lots of locally owned bars i wouldnt say so knowing the rent guide for wetherspoons make it easay to see why they took it probably just on twice as much rent for a unit four times bigger than any other in that area which i know for a fact .
ps dont think the night time economy is that great either its not a patch on 12 months ago .
