One man who's not involved in the hurly burly of elections today is good friend of QLocal, former county councillor Paul Greenall of Westhead.
This PR flooded into the busy news desk yesterday evening:
'After 20 years as a Local councillor, Paul Greenall has decided to call it a day and not seek reelection in this year’s Local elections.
He was first elected to West Lancashire Borough Council in 2001, where he later served as Cabinet Member for Refuse Collection, Recycling and Community Safety, Deputy Mayor and Mayor of West Lancashire, and Deputy Leader.
Paul stood down from the Borough Council in May 2017 after he was elected to the County Council.
He said: “For 20 years it has been an honour to represent my community, in particular my beloved village of Westhead, on the Borough and then County Councils.
West Lancashire in a wonderful place and during 2012/13 when I served as Mayor, I witnessed at first hand the dedication of the army of ordinary people in our community, who voluntarily give their time for the benefit of others.
Indeed, it was during my year as Mayor that I experienced my greatest moments as a councillor, which was officially opening Westhead village carnival, and being taken on a tour of Parliament by our MP, Rosie Cooper.
As a councillor I have been fortunate to work with some very talented Council Officers and fellow councillors from all parties, who to this day retain my admiration and respect. However, one of the first decisions I made when elected back in 2001, after I was told off for sitting in a senior Conservative councillor’s seat in the council chamber at my very first meeting (what a warm welcome that was!), was that I never wanted to become one of those councillors who stay on for too long because they do not know when it’s time to go.
The best councillors I have worked with quit politics when they still had much to offer, and it is those that I am inspired by in my decision to leave politics now.
I have always maintained an active life outside of politics and I have some very exciting opportunities and new challenges that I wish to pursue.
So, after 20 years in local politics, it's time to take a leap and do something completely different. After all, I’ve had a good innings, I’ve done some good things, but now it's time to move on.'
