Following on from last season’s successful promotion to the Northern Premier League, Skelmersdale United FC have this week announced the appointment of a new club Chairman, Ormskirk's Gordon Johnson, who'll replace Paul Griffiths.
Griffiths successfully steered the club through a number of troublesome years following the club’s departure from their ‘Stormy Corner’ ground, including a groundshare at Prescot Cables and ultimately a return home to Skelmersdale to their current home at JMO Sports Park.
He'll remain a valued member of the club’s board of directors, but being unable to dedicate the time required due to family reasons has decided to step down from the chairmanship role.
Paul will be replaced as club chairman by former borough Mayor Gordon Johnson with effect from 30th June. He brings a wealth of experience to the club having been an active match official in the semi professional game and also on the Football League and for the last five years Vice Chairman and Club Welfare Officer for Ashton Town AFC, together with also having worked at Liverpool County Football Association most recently as the County FA Safeguarding Officer, a role he left in February 2021.
On his appointment Gordon told QLocal: "I was absolutely delighted to be recently given the opportunity to join Skelmersdale United’s board of directors.
"The club is one that I have had a connection with for many years now and have keenly followed their progress.
"To also be asked to take on the role of Chairman is a fantastic honour and one that I couldn’t refuse. Exciting times lie ahead for the club on it’s return to the Northern Premier League and together with my fellow board members we are hoping to consolidate on last season’s success and hopefully build on this moving forwards.
"The club already has a strong and committed board of Directors one of whom will continue to be my predecessor Paul Griffiths. It would be remiss of me not to thank Paul for all of his hard work and time dedicated to the club over many many years. Luckily for us all, and myself in particular, Paul will remain on the board and be on hand to offer his help, advice and support during the coming season.
"We are under no illusions that it will be a tough one returning to the Northern Premier League but a challenge that the club relish and are looking forward to taking on”.
The club are always on the look out for help and support especially for match day volunteers to assist in the smooth running of the match day experience for all visitors to JMO Sports Park.
