This borough council press release makes for very interesting reading; shame about the irony in the opening sentence...
22 January 2021 Issue: 01
Have your say on our exciting plans for Ormskirk town centre
Ormskirk's town centre is a bustling and historic part of the Borough, with many interesting shops and cafes to explore. We want to make this area even better for the people who live, visit, shop and work there. We want to hear your views about theOrmskirk Eastern Gateway project - our exciting proposals for that side of Ormskirk town centre, which include replacing the bus station building, making the area more attractive and improving accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists. Working with Lancashire County Council, we have come up with the exciting scheme to improve the Moor Street, St Helens Road and Bus Station areas that lead residents and visitors into the historic heart of Ormskirk. These areas are part of the Ormskirk Town Centre Heritage Action Zone, as designated by Historic England.
Our proposals include demolishing the current bus station buildingwhich would make way for a cycle path running from Moor Street to the recently-improved path for walkers and cyclists from the bus station to the rail station; a new smaller building would then be put on the opposite side of the bus station with public toilets and facilities for drivers.
We also want to make Moor Street more appealing by making pedestrian access better and installing new benches and trees amongst other improvements.
The Ormskirk Eastern Gateway project links in with plans already agreed to improve the footpaths and create dedicated cycle lanes along St Helens Road and Ruff Lane. Other plans in this scheme include making the link between the bus station and St Helens Road to the town centre more pedestrian-friendly.
We want to hear what you think of the aims and objectives of our scheme and are inviting you to take part in the public consultation we are running between Monday 25 January and Sunday 21 February.
Councillor Ian Moran, Leader of West Lancashire Borough Council and portfolio holder for economic regeneration, said: "These are very exciting plans for Ormskirk. Please take part in our consultation as we really want to hear your views on the aims and objectives of our proposals. We want to make this the best possible scheme for the town and the views of those who live in, work and visit Ormskirk are extremely important."
Councillor Keith Iddon, Cabinet member for Highways and Transport at Lancashire County Council, said: "This scheme looks to build on the recent investment focused on Moor Street to make Ormskirk more attractive to businesses, visitors, and everyone who lives and works there.
"A key element of these proposals involves improving sustainable transport options for public transport users, pedestrians and cyclists as part of our ongoing plans to encourage walking and cycling and reduce congestion in the town centre.
"We are very pleased to be working with West Lancashire Borough Council on this scheme, and I would ask people to engage in the consultation and let us know what they think."
All plans are subject to planning permission and other consents, where required.
