The manager and staff of a popular student bar's set for an almost ‘Full Monty’ tomorrow night to raise money for the hospital which, he says, saved his baby son’s life.
Ziggy Fox Flannery is now a healthy three-year-old but at just two weeks old was diagnosed with pyloric stenosis, a condition occurring in an estimated one in 500 babies, that affects the digestive system whereby food cannot empty out of the stomach to the small bowel via an opening called the pylorus.
This can lead to weight loss from frequent vomiting, because the body cannot get the nutrients it needs from food. When the stenosis (the narrowing of the opening) becomes severe, the vomiting becomes persistent and projectile, leaving babies at risk of severe dehydration.
Ziggy - named after Ziggy Stardust, alter ego of the late David Bowie as they shared the same birthday of January 8 - was rushed to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital where he underwent corrective surgery to put him on the way to a full recovery.
Now grateful dad Scott, manager of Alpine on Railway Road, is keen to show his appreciation by raising some much-needed funds for the hospital.
It's staging a special fundraising night with all proceeds from tickets, priced at £3 each, being donated to Alder Hey; among the highlights of the evening will see staff, including Scott, giving a Full Monty-style performance for visitors on the club’s bar.
However, they won’t be going ‘all the way’ as Scott says: “That wouldn’t be appropriate for a children’s hospital!” - instead they will be stripping down to what he called their ‘tiny tighty-whiteys.’
“It’s nothing to be taken seriously - just a good laugh for a good cause.
“When my son was taken to Alder Hey they looked after him wonderfully well. Without them I can’t imagine what could have happened.”
Doors will open at 8pm and the Full Monty performance is expected to take place at around 11pm- there will also be a raffle to boost the total raised for the hospital.
