The latest virtual talk from Ormskirk and District Family History Society moves away from the “standard” birth, baptism, marriage, death, burial and census records that we associate with family history to consider why local records from the town, village or city where our ancestors lived can improve our understanding of the world as they knew it - and even some of the changes they might have seen during their lifetime. 'Unusual Records From West Lancashire Villages' draws on two sets of original records published by ODFHS and George Coulthard Newstead’s 1893 book, “Gleanings From The Annals Of Aughton” (freely available online as a digitised book) to tell us more about what happened to the residents of Tarleton in the 1700s if they didn’t play their part in keeping the village tidy, and discusses why a certain Henry Duckworth was a possible troublemaker in the reign of Queen Anne! From shocking levels of spending on Bonfire Night in Aughton during the Georgian period to the sad case of William Harrison, a visitor from Whitehaven who just happened to meet the wrong man on the wrong night on his way to Liverpool, and a travelling pest controller who came all the way from Garstang to catch moles in Burscough, the talk hopes to show that local records can shed light on our understanding of not just how a town or village developed as a settlement, but also how its residents lived together as a community. The Tarleton Manor Court Records (1696-1802) and Burscough Township Books (1770-1850, including separate lists of the Poor Housekeepers Who Had Beef) are available to buy from ODFHS on CD or USB stick. Please contact the Society or visit their online Parish Chest shop at https://www.parishchest.com/ormskirk...t-fhs-3508.php for further details. Ormskirk and District Family History Society would also like to thank everyone who has supported their work by watching their virtual YouTube talks since the current circumstances forced the suspension of their meetings in March 2020. Collectively, the eight video talks have been viewed more than 1150 times! To watch our latest, please visit the following link:
