Our thanks to a disgruntled Aughton taxpayer for this story:
West Lancashire taxpayers have paid towards the bill for subsidised meals at Westminster watering holes, with the costs running up into millions for MPs and Lords to chow down on fancy grub for under a fiver.
The bill was for £4.6million, and we stumped up the cash last year to subsidise Westminster’s bars and restaurants in the Covid pandemic.
The bill, £2m more than usual, came after most of the catering outlets had to close. Westminster eateries are propped up with public cash because many are loss-making; the money allows MPs to eat cheaply at the four venues currently open.
In Bellamy’s they can whet their appetite with a starter of celeriac and thyme soup for 88p. They can then feast on baked pork chops on a bed of braised red cabbage with sage-roasted fennel and tomato sauce, for £2.79.
The feast can be rounded off with apple and cinnamon crumble with custard or cream for 98p. A roast dinner with all the trimmings in the Member’s Dining Room is just £5.67 - in comparison, the nearby Red Lion Fullers pub charges £19 for a similar meal.
Why should West Lancashire subsidise Westminster?
The story comes in the light of this from MP Rosie Cooper: https://www.qlocal.co.uk/ormskirk/news_list/%27Credit_where_it%27s_due%27_says_MP_Rosie-55051403.htm
