When my wife and I got married in 1983, we missed out on our first home – a terraced cottage on Middlewood Drive – by just £500.
Back then, you’d submit an offer in a sealed envelope - undeterred, we bought a two bed semi on Ryburn Rd. for £17,000, living there for four and a half years before selling it for a £9,000 profit and moving to our current home - an ex police house which was a mortgage re-possession - on Yew Tree Road for £28,000.
Those were the days!
The increasing gentrification of Aughton is personified by the new Meadow View development off Scarth Hill Lane and who can blame Kingswood Homes for cashing in? And, good news, they've saved an old oak tree at the rear of the new build!
Trouble is, where are all today's first time buyers going to live, start a family and settle down? A friend near us with a business in Aughton is renting at £600 a month in Ormskirk (at 'mate's rates') and can't afford to move to the Aughton area as yet.
There were hopes of a new starter home development next to Aughton Park station but as yet it’s still the empty Mount Carmel school field - and you can bet your bottom dollar that if the new homes are ever built on Parrs Lane they’ll be out of the price range of most first time buyers.
All a little sad, isn’t it, for the future of Aughton?
