It’s all change at one of Ormskirk best known shoe shops!

Long established Clarks on Moor St. is now part of Tonks Shoes with the Wigan firm stepping into to save the branch that had been threatened with closure.

The good news is that each of the staff have kept their jobs with Tonks now stocking a much wider selection of shoes for men, women and children of all ages.

Tonks Shoes Ltd is a family business founded in 1978 by Elizabeth and Jeffery Tonks. In 1982 their son Michael joined the business and trebled the shop portfolio.

In 2008 Matthew Tonks started working for the company, and over the next 12 years he helped grow the business to eight shops with Ormskirk being number eight! His father Michael had wanted the Ormskirk store for a number of years, but the opportunity never came about.

Said Michael: “The town has always been known as an affluent area, with a good mix of local and national stores.

“The Clarks name might have disappeared had not Tonks stepped in to save it.”

The company’s optimistic the new store will be a success; despite the challenges of internet shopping, Tonks believe there’s still a place for good quality high street businesses and that names like Clarks will continue to attract customers.

How come can they still trade under clarks ??
