The family who own The Wayfarer in Parbold have created a new refill shop there which hopes to inspireand enable the community to be more sustainable.
“The way we live is actually unsustainable, it’s a reality that we cannot afford to ignore,”said Rachel Birkett from the Wayfarer.
“We want to make it easy for customers to stock and re-stockeveryday household items without wasteful packaging. Making small changes to our shopping habitscan make a big difference.“
Wayfarer fans need not worry; the shop's not replacing the restaurant. Their conservatory willbecome a multi purpose space, designed to switch between shop and restaurant seamlessly.
What’s in Store? They sell most things loose by weight so you only buy what you need; the idea is that customers taketheir own containers to refill but re-purposed jars and paper bags are available in store. They stock Food: Baking, Breakfast, Pulses & Seeds, Coffee & Tea, Oils & Vinegars, Pasta & Rice, Herbs & Spices,Snacks, Fruits & Dried Nuts, and Beer. Non Food includes Refill Toiletries, Refill Household products & plastic free alternatives, along with Jars & Bottles.
Parbold's already home to a number of independent businesses including a local butchers, greengrocers and dairy farm which have all flourished during lockdown.
“A couple of years ago we had the idea to open a zero waste shop but the timing didn’t feel right”said Katie Street.
“Lockdown has given us the opportunity to do it and the feedback we’ve had isincredible. A Greener Weigh is the shop our community has been waiting for!”
The problem of plastic is a hot topic at the moment with David Attenborough and others highlighting the issue.
Cameron Birkett, A Greener Weigh’s Manager said: “We want to help people reduce single use plastic;recycling draws us into a false sense of security. The best thing to do is use less plastic to start with.”
The team have sourced many local suppliers who supply goods in containers that are returned and reused to create a closed loop, cutting out waste packaging entirely.
Opening times are Wednesday - Saturday 10am - 4.30pm; a click & collect and delivery service iscoming soon.
