In 2021, the Museum of Liverpool’s Archaeology team lead a community excavation to investigate the site of two houses which stood on the Royal Albert Dock, numbers 7 and 8 Albert Parade (adjacent to the Piermaster’s House) from 26 May until 30 July 2021. The houses, built in 1852, were the homes of dock masters and their families and were damaged during the Liverpool Blitz of the Second World War.

With the help of the local community the team uncovered the remains of the houses along with the stories of some of those who lived there. The residences were built in 1852 six years after the opening of the Royal Albert Dock 175 years ago!

The aim was to find out more about family life on the docks by excavating where the dock masters and their families lived, worked and played and by examining material remains uncovered.
