It may just be the fact that Liverpool is not on the minds of MOST people born and bred in Southport, personally I have no interest in Liverpool. I had enough of it after the local government re organisation when I was absorbed from Lanc's County into Merseyside and everything revolved around a headquarters in Liverpool rather than Preston and Liverpool's was the system thrust on everyone even though Liverpool was outnumbered by ex County Borough and Lanc's County personnel.

Any Sunday - it won't matter if the topic is of no interest. I take an interest mainly because of the History of the area and because I dislike intensely how Liverpool has changed under mismanagement.

I agree with you there - but Southport's history has been brought up so many times, I thought I would use another nearby area. Liverpool is a complete disaster under very poor management. It has allowed for shady corruption continuously at the expense of a once fantastic looking city. Those in council who quite rightly have opposed certain dubious political moves have found themselves booted out of office. I strongly object to profits from Southport facilities being paid into a joint council pot in Liverpool, especially in the light of what has now been revealed about the management there. To think! Horror! That Southport should ever become another Labour arm of Liverpool!

    They aren't.
Liverpool City Region is funded by central government to undertake duties devolved from central government.
It is not funded by councils.

+ 1 from me, whoever was responsible for handing over control of Southport to Bootle should be taken out and shot.

It was the Electorate, for many years after Local Government Reorganisation the Whole of Sefton was under Tory & Liberal rule, both have gradually lost seats.

It was the Conservative councillors that were elected in Southport.

Liverpool is a combined council comprising Halton, Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St. Helens and the Wirral. Over recent years, it is true that Liverpool has been given devolved finance from central government - but it does receive money from each of the associated councils.

For instance the car parking fees from Southport are said to be reinvested into the parking fees collection and agencies and also to aid with transport and concessionary travel (Liverpool Echo) However - Liverpool combined council claim that they pay for the transport and concessionary costs:
"TheLCRCA’s transport responsibilities are funded through transportlevies across each of the six councils. This funds concessionarytravel, subsidised bus services, the Mersey Ferries and a range ofother services.
The transport levy 2019/20 for each of theMerseyside Councils within the LCRCA is:

Which means that the car parking costs go to the LCRCA.

    Transport Levy
    2018/19
    £'000
    Transport Levy
    2019/20
    £'000
    Knowsley 10,032 10,006
    Liverpool 32,869 33,095
    St Helens 12,107 12,073
    Sefton 18,605 18,490
    Wirral 21,786 21,736
    Total 95,400 95,400

Yet the combined council have managed to raise funds for the region - but those funds are spent in Liverpool alone:

"Ourdevolution deal means that we are taking control of the importantdecisions that matter to our city region and can invest our money inthe things that will bring the biggest benefits locally. With thesimple aim of becoming a truly global city region, this means we canmake the Liverpool City Region the best possible place to live, work, play and grow old.
Butwe are not just thinking long term. We are delivering real benefitsfor real people, right now.
Ontop of our £900 million devolution deal, the Liverpool City RegionCombined Authority has secured more than half a billion pounds inadditional funding from government, including:
£173million in Transforming Cities Funding which we are using tomodernise and improve the way we travel in and around the cityregion.

    • £8 million in extra funding to tackle homelessness and rough sleeping.
    • A share of £300 million to connect Liverpool to the HS2 network, which will also link in to Crossrail for the North.

Theinvestments that we’ve already made in our first three years willdeliver 9,000 jobs and 5,500 apprenticeships for local people."

    Not only that, but:
LiverpoolEcho – The regional Mayor who was elected in 2017 has put forwardplans to charge all residents in Liverpool, Wirral, Knowsley, Sefton,St. Helens and Halton an extra payment on what they already pay incouncil tax, in order to raise an added £7.6 million each year. Hesays the precept is needed to cover the running costs of his office –but will mainly go towards allowing the Combined Liverpool Authoritythat he runs, to develop and deliver its initiatives around jobs, skills, transport, housing, economic development and super-fastdigital connectivity across the city region. It will raise an extra£7.6 million per year.
Again - Southport pays to Liverpool
