It looks drastic - but it's working ... that's the verdict on the controversial use of razor wire to deter thieves at the popular Scarisbrick marina.
Since it was put in place six weeks ago, crime by anglers - some but not all from Liverpool - has reduced to nil, proving its effectiveness.
But not everyone was or is happy at its installation, as this recent e mail from an Angela Hilldrup proves: 'I am looking into why approx. 100m of razor wire has been installed along the public canal path at Scarisbrick Marina.
There are small signs reading 'warning, protected by razor wire'.
What is protected and why?
Surely this is a public right of way and this poses a real danger to the children, cyclist, adults, the disabled and wildlife.
I regularly take my disabled father along this stretch of path and surely this cannot be legal, furthermore is this not a conservation area.
Could you look into this please and advise on how we go about getting this took down?'
Bad news Angela - it looks like it's there for keeps....

Makes a pretty area look awful, scene from Colditz!
As that forms part of the toe path have they consulted with the Canals & River Trust?
If the same gentleman owns the marina as when I last visited in 2011 I'm not really surprised he is a miserable cantankerous old sod!

He passed away about 6 weeks ago.

Does Angela regularly hurl her disabled father over fences? If not, I don't see how it's a danger to him. An eyesore, maybe. But not a danger unless you scale the fence.

There's no risk to anyone on the towpath, as the wire has been installed inside the marina boundary fence.

Certain types of 'anglers' pursue fish into the places where they are safest - in this case inside the entrance to the marina, which is private property. It can't be closed, so in effect it is the only means of entry once all the gates are closed. As they don't want to get wet swimming in, they're resorting to walking along the towpath (after parking on the restaurant car park and crossing the road bridge), then climbing over the fence to fish inside the marina at night. Everyone knows what's going on, so the owners have taken steps to prevent them getting inside the complex.
This is essentially a non-story. I don't recall seeing a similar report when Mr Smith in Acacia Avenue put new fence panels up - but that sums-up the standard of 'journalism' on here I suppose.

It's not a danger to anyone but those climbing over the fence. Don't see the issue.
