Southport Offshore Rescue Trust have issued the following statement regarding the construction of the new Lifeboat Station after false reports appeared on local social media sites.

Lifeboat Station update: It will not have gone unnoticed that there has been an issue with the construction of the new Southport Lifeboat Station currently being built on Marine Drive.

The Southport Offshore Rescue Trust would like to take this opportunity to offer our supporters an update on the progress of the build.

Unfortunately, the steel frame corrosion protection system originally applied to the construction was not up to the specification requested by the Southport Offshore Rescue Trust; as a result, the original paintwork has had to be stripped back and a new system applied.

Due to the location of the building and the high levels of salt in the air, this has been a slow process that has often been affected by the weather conditions.

We have been working closely with our principal contractor and paint experts to ensure that a solution is found that meets our requirement.

Unfortunately this has led to a significant delay in the completion of the build, however we believe that the completed building, funded entirely by public donations, should be correct and not at the expense of quality.

Whilst this has been a frustrating time for everyone at Southport Lifeboat, we are optimistic that visible progress will be made onsite soon.

In the meantime, our contractor has been carrying out other work onsite such as the installation of utilities and the construction of the emergency vehicle entrance on to Marine Drive in order to minimise further delay.

Contrary to publicised reports, there have been no health and safety or funding issues involved in causing the delay.

We would like to thank our supporters for their patience and continued support.

These things happen, let's hope the weather allows some decent progress now.

But these things shouldn’t happen. Sounds like the contractors are to blame if it isn’t up to the standard that was originally requested by Southport lifeboat. Let’s hope the contractors are footing the bill and not the public.

Has the steel that has gone in the foundation and already been concreted in been taken into account about not being protected correctly

Kind of protected by the concrete I'd guess.

The site where Morrison’s is now, was under development in 1991 to become Southport Winter Gardens. Halfway through building the £40million pound development the main contractors SIBEC went into receivership and it was never completed. Too late for The land of little people which was the original model village, it was ripped up to make way for the ill fated development. Safeway’s took over the site and built the supermarket which now houses Morrison’s.

The steelwork that was on the original plans was galvanised steel. All the steel got erected, then a local builder pointed out that it wasn’t galvanised. Instead of contractor being made to take down and reorder. It was decided to paint in some sort of other protective coating. Similar thing happened on the sea scouts building, but was discovered after building finished. It’s right on sea front open to the elements. Galvanised was ordered for that reason. After all the hard work to locally raise money for the building. It’s not right that the contractor can get away with this. It’s in black and white on specifications?? Was priced into the construction cost at considerable extra cost because of its location.yet didn’t appear, now trying to get away with applying something else that won’t be fit for purpose.

Unfortunately not.. There is moisture in concrete all the time. It acts like sponge too always reacting to its environment.
This is why moisture tests are often carried out. Many flooring problems are actually caused by water being absorbed by concrete, it then transfers to flooring and causesall sorts of issues.
I'm sure/hope that this has been thought through properly.

If the original spec said galvanised and the contractor won the bid on that basis but installed non galvanised instead then the Charity should refuse the build and make the contractor pull it all down and install what was quoted for not some after thought half arsed bodge.

The Contractor will have liability insurance, let them make the claim and cover the costs

All Coating systems should be supervised by an independent third party during application, at the steel mills and on site ! It could be galvanised (Done in the coatings shop) or a two pack Epoxy or Chlorinated Rubber on site under sheeted controlled conditions. However prior to issuing the contract for the build there should have been a Performance Bond in place . This acts like an insurance policy to cover remedial works should they be required by the main contractor or Steelwork fabricator ! Liability insurance does not have this scope !

Our Lifeboat is not part of the RNLI!!! Local funds, raised locally, spent locally, saving lives locally. They're all unpaid volunteers doing their best to deliver for our town, including the directors who are doing their up most to ensure this boathouse is built properly without corners being cut.
