As it's now coming up to the time of year when we see the cavalcades of Travellers coming into Southport, presumably under the new emergency measures the Police are now able to act to prevent it, either by stopping them by the roadside and sending them back from whence they came, as they do with holidaymakers caravans just now, or dispersing them from their illegal sites due to social distancing measures or gatherings of more than two people, not of the same household.
No need to wait for civil proceedings to go through the courts, The Police now have these powers, will they use them I wonder or just save them for dealing with the ordinary man in the street or those who may take their kids to the crowded park, in order not to offend our travelling friends

As dire as things look and as inconvenient as these necessary new regulations are, perhaps there's a silver lining there.

I presume the horse fairs such as Appleby won't be taking place so there's really no need for them to be going anywhere.

There's a big difference between 'travellers' and your average joe in a motorhome.......

1) 'Travellers' move from place to place en-mass, arriving within hours/a day or two of the other members of their entourage. Invariably have unruly kids and dogs with them. Park in or next to population centres, never stay too long, and leave all kinds of rubbish behind.

Often have flatback trucks/trailers for gardening, flagging, roofing work. Large caravans invariably form part of their contingent. May blitz the local area door-to-door, selling dodgy power tools etc, with high-pressure methods. In short, they are easily identifiable as a type.

2) Genuine motorhomers as a rule, move individually. Rarely have kids along. Dispose of their rubbish. Don't make trouble, or prowl local areas looking to get money. Tend to select locations more for their scenic qualities, than for any cashmaking potential.

A) Two or more weeks ago, Caravan Club sites will have been open for tourers....As sites close down due to the virus, those usually resident will have had to move, very likely inc those in the o/p..

B) Appleby fair is a separate issue, I doubt travellers going to it will come here. If the fair tries to take place, the police will really have their hands full attempting to stop it!
