Giant mushroom farm
Whenever I drive from Southport to the M6 Northbound I see signs saying "No To Giant Mushroom Farm". Are the residents objecting to a very large farm growing normal size mushrooms or are they objecting to a farm of average size growing some (one?) abnormally sized mushrooms?

I saw that too and assumed a local business simply wanted to expand....But was then given to understand it's actually owned by Far Eastern big business. Imo, if it's going to grow that massively, it should relocate to the nearby Industrial Estate, rather than concrete over farmland. Not least because a lot more trucks will be entering/leaving the site, posing a risk to cyclists on country lanes unsuitable for juggernauts.

Are we talking about the proposed development of the mushroom farm in Scarisbrick? I thought that it had been refused permission a few months back. Quite rightly so too. It would have looked completely out of place, a massive factory unit in the middle of some beautiful green belt land when there’s an industrial estate that would be far better suited a couple of miles down the road.

If it has been refused, I'm relieved to hear it....Although owners with deep pockets have been known to take decisions like that to appeal.

If we want to lower our meat production then places like this have to be built.
A lot of our countryside has cow and chicken sheds which are not very pleasing to the eye.
The countryside is a place of work to produce food for so many.

A) I doubt mushrooms have much if any nutritional value when compared to meat, which is a high-protein food.
B) It's a question of scale - this proposal is/was on an altogether greater order of magnitude. Mushrooms don't need soil. They can be grown equally well on an industrial estate, where (unlike the countryside) the road system is designed to cope with a procession of artics.

In modern agriculture, many things are grown that don't need soil and could be grown on industrial estates.
The countryside is littered with heavy vehicles.
Mushrooms are seen as a viable source of food/protein for vegans, even if you have to eat lots more.
I am not a vegan.

Q. How do you turn a thread about mushrooms into yet another cycling rant?
A. Invite a w*nker like PNP to comment.

I don't dislike your post my mouse went into a frenzy .
Par for the course isn't it if there was a thread about the surface of the sun he'd get a bike into it.
I'm surprised the Royal College of Psychiatry haven't got the fool in a glass jar.

Once again you are wrong and made yourself look a right t~#t. It was a local firm who was just looking to increase their business and create local jobs, sadly people are all for the idea untill it's on their doorstep. As for juggernauts, where the hell do you think you are America.

It was a local firm - until (I'm reliably told) they sold out. If you know different, then please supply a link to confirm your post.
Once expanded, they will have a steady flow of artics calling daily en-route to large distribution depots. People don't want heavy goods vehicles racing up and down narrow Moss lanes!

Not entirely local.
‘ The firm, which is part owned locally and part by Korean car giant Hyundai, wanted to develop a building spanning 17,561 m2 and housing a purpose-built growing and incubation room, office, laboratory, plant room, cold store, packing area, and boiler room.’

Thanks for the link....it gives the name of the Far Eastern multinational: Hyundai. Btw, the 17,000+ sq metre extension was intended as just the start (i.e. Phase One). They were intending to expand it very much further over a ten year period. A quiet rural setting like Smithy Lane (which btw forms part of the Lancashire Cycleway) is no place to put a giant factory!
