The UK and France support the idea of a UK-EU re-admission agreement to mutual advantage in terms of deterring illegal migration,
It was agreed that the UK and France would further maximise our ability to detect, disrupt and deter organised criminal groups by sharing respective covert policing expertise, capacity and capability in support of joint intelligence development and live investigations on each side of the Channel as well as further upstream.
Is it any wonder Boris and Priti are sick of them.
Gullible is the best word I can find at the moment to describe you.
France , in the end, has no requirement to prevent these people leaving.
Everything they do is for either humanitarian reasons or because they have exceptionally agreed something with us.
I can entirely understand why they think we have deliberately undermined ourselves, by our Brexit-related actions, so making the job of preventing entry and detecting criminals, even more difficult. They owe us nothing. Especially as the French people already do far more to accept and assimilate migrants than we do, yet we make all the fuss as demonstrated in this thread.
What Johnson and Patel are doing is not in any way trying to make that work . They are play acting for the people like you who swallow it all.
Their actions could almost be described as intended to alienate them rather than to be co-operative in search of a solution.

Emphasis is mostly on preventing rubber boats from launching, or mid-Channel rescue, with little thought to effectively intercepting these people on arrival.....Imo, few would attempt the crossing, if they knew we were catching, detaining and returning all who make it across.
The UK had a pretty effective 'coastwatch' during the last war, to prevent clandestine enemy landings. Seems to me, that would be a pretty good solution now. Bring in our armed forces, to patrol the affected 20mile stretch of shoreline, sea and air as spotters.
Feed the information gathered to a second line of defence, comprising 'catch and detain' teams. Keep adequate coaches stationed along the coast, to ship all those detained to secure camps. From where they would be processed and either released if granted asylum, or returned to France or wherever they came from.

This is my favourite line of yours;
Everything they do is for either humanitarian reasons or because they have exceptionally agreed something with us.
What humanitarian actions are these watching the boats go out into the channel while having a smoke ? or maybe destroying the peoples tents and taking their food.
They have eschewed our offer of help and got one part time plane from Frontex.
Would this be the France with over 1000 planes in its Air force or how about the The SNSM their lifeboat equivalent?
Clearly they are throwing an awful lot at the problem
and I am described as gullible
I repeat
France has no reason other than humanitarian ones to prevent this. These people are not breaking the law in France.
Nonetheless France has prevented 55 of them.
We have made all this much more difficult for ourselves severing our agreements with France , the Netherlands, and denying ourselves access to EU criminal databases.

The "Britannia hovel"....don't you mean a "four star hotel"?

I think you have lost the plot on this;
Whatever lies behnd French Actions claiming they are Humanitarian Ones undermines any value your posts may have had.
People "waved" off into the channel in jumped up paddling pools, their shelter destroyed in miserable cold and wet conditions and food confiscated is not in any examination a humanitarian action.
The RNLI don't need "an agreement" or a wad of bribe money in their pockets to act in a humanitarian way.
Neither do our Border Force when our brave people put their lives at risk to rescue the fallout of Frances's callous inaction other than humanitarian ones to prevent this disregard for these people's welfare.
Just as when migrants hung under lorries or clung to trains it took us to sort it out.
So what have the wonderful EU done with Frontex to sort this crisis, one part-time plane.

Abolish Schengen.
Migrants will apply for asylum only with honesty of Birth Country produced.
All successful asylum claims will be welcomed across all European democracy's.
Quote
"French officials say people smugglers exploit the free circulation of people among Schengen countries and shortcomings in cross-border police cooperation to evade arrests.
“[The smugglers] are international and play with our borders,” said Darmanin on Thursday. “We tell our Belgian friends, our German friends that we cannot be alone in this fight.”

They will not abolish Schengen. Not a chance. And certainly not to please us.
We have a government whose grasp of conducting foreign policy matches its other efforts, ie negligible. Having spent 5 years abusing France we now think the way to get their support is to shout loudly " Don't you know who I am?"
Remember the picture of Johnson with his foot on an antique coffee table in the Elysee when meeting Macron?
It makes you cringe

Schengen makes no difference whatsoever, France has over 3k km land borders and another 1k coastline, that is not manageable.

Reflect upon the fact that a French Presidential election campaign is under way. The betting seems to be on Mme. Le Pen versus President Macron in the run off.
Nationalist sentiment appears to be in the ascendant across the EU notwithstanding having been rebuffed for the time being in most western European countries. |
|
In light of this, the short-term discussions between the UK and France are quite likely to remain deadlocked. In this context more migrant deaths are probable. The Prime Minister's choice to pander to ultra-Brexit sentiment rather than taking a pragmatic, longer-term and humanitarian view makes our government culpable; not that France and the EU are behaving well in this. Indeed, democratic institutions, always a bit of a mirage, will cease to be anything more than a sham as borders are militarized and fear of change exploited for the purposes of power and influence within nations!
The Schengen Agreement prematurely presumed a level of inter-governmental cohesion. It was yet another instance of idealism trumping realism. From its modest beginnings in 1985 the Agreement has expanded from 5 to 26 countries. Like other aspect of European Union politics, the Agreement is in danger of collapsing spectacularly.
Mass migration is not going to go away. Climate change along with the pressure of human population growth and technological developments directed to consumerism will see to that. It seems inescapable that there will be conflict and human suffering associated with migratory pressure. So-called "ethno-nationalists" will stoke fear. Many norms and quasi-legal protocols developed since 1945 will certainly come under strain in the decades ahead. The future appears bleak — for our nominally democratic institutions, for western nations' citizens and of course, for the migrants from stricken countries.

Don't know where you got the text from, but it's wrong.
Nationalist movements peaked about 2 years ago and Le Pen is struggling to make the final 2. Looks likely to be Macron vs Zemmour and Macron is favourite.
