Eyeonsouthport reports - The emergency services were called to Lord Street in Southport at approximately 10.00am today (21st June) after a woman was hit by a van close to Eastbank Street junction.

The woman was sat in the road before being helped onto a bench. She was treated by Paramedics for cuts to her leg after a half hour wait.

Time to divert through traffic away from that section of Lord St, it should be restricted to buses, bikes, taxis emergency vehicles and access only for deliveries.
Too many pedestrians just step off the pavement even when there are crossings only a few metres away, she probably passed the crossing to get to where she crossed.

So you advocate banning traffic from Lord Street to protect pedestrians from themselves.

Yes, it is clogged up with traffic there is no need for through traffic to use Lord St if you want to get to the other end of town there are far easier and quicker routes.

And by doing that you destroy all the businesses on Lord Street. While it's up to us all to be safe wherever we are, why should the majority have to suffer when one person makes a mistake or can't look after themselves and stay safe when crossing a road?

If that's what you advocate all the time then why arent the bike lane markers and bollards removed after one lady tripped and fell on them?

    ::shakes head::

    Get an effing grip!

A better solution would be to put metal barriers the whole length of Lord Street and the only gaps to allow pedestrians to cross would be at the designated crossing points, then no-one can step off the pavement and harm themselves.

Apart from the impracticality of such a suggestion, we don't know how the accident occurred so far, so all those dreaming up solutions to an unknown problem are wasting their time.

    Such as?

I go to Morrison's regularly from the fire station end along Lord Street as, surprising though it may seem, it's quicker than going via Leicester Street and the Promenade; same for the reverse journey.

Apparently the lady who was involved in the accident is in her 80s and, thankfully, only had minor leg injuries, according to the Echo.

It’s only the bicycle brigade that want lord st closed and shops shut, if we all drive down the back streets and promenade then they will be busy and then they will want those roads closed on the same poor arguments, they won’t be happy until its a ghost town with no special events, shops or cars at all and soon they won’t want pedestrians as if you read between the lines it’s these that step out in front of cyclists particularly at crossings when the red light and the green man symbol is showing. There are cyclists then there are lycralists .

nearer to the shops .Obviously you have no issues with walking ,so sod everyone else, seems to be the logic of the fit healthy people of this town.

That is a good example of why Lord St should be unavailable to through traffic. If that were to be done, you would only lose a couple of minutes making that same trip via the Prom. I'm sure a scheme can be devised, which would still allow for disabled drivers access for parking.

Shoppers/visitors in the towns central shopping area, really don't need through-traffic (flowing along a major 'car sewer') whizzing past them, quite the reverse.....They need a safe stress-free environment, where shopping can be done in a relaxed manner, without all that noise and stink and the ever-present risk of being squashed on the road!

Totally and utterly deluded. I wish you'd just go away (using more profane language than that)

Can someone provide figures for the amount of accidents involving pedestrians on Lord Street in the past 20 years? It's going to be minimal.

So if one person is involved in a accident we have to shut the road to traffic for good. Well in that case, we'd have no roads open at all in Southport or anywhere else for that matter as there must have been at least one accident on every road in this town.

PNP go boil your head and bugger off back to the Netherlands where you like it so much.

It was reported elsewhere that she was in her 40s
