Southport MP Damien Moore will host a public meeting at Holy Trinity Church on Hoghton Street next Saturday, open to any Southport resident or business who wants to see the town centre cycle lanes and bollards removed.

The meeting will take place between 1pm and 2:30pm, with attendees being asked to arrive for 12:45. It comes following an announcement by Sefton Council that a decision on whether to keep, scrap, or amend the town centre cycle lanes will be taken in the Autumn.

Mr. Moore says that there is overwhelming public opposition to the lanes and bollards brought in back in 2020, which replaced on-street parking on Hoghton Street and closed off Queens Road to passing traffic.

The alterations have severely impacted the businesses and organisations along the road, including the historic church.

Mr. Moore is encouraging those opposed to the scheme to come to the meeting, which requires no booking, to hear how the lanes have impacted upon businesses and residents. Those in attendance will be given an opportunity to share their thoughts on how the community can come together to have the scheme removed once and for all.

An update will also be provided on both the Liveable Neighbourhood Scheme which was proposed by Sefton Council and Sustrans, and the Council plans to extend the town centre lanes and bollards across Southport – from Crossens to Ainsdale.

Damien Moore, MP for Southport, said:

“Everybody knows of my resolute opposition to Sefton Council’s cycle lane plans, which have been detrimental to businesses and residents in the town centre.

“At a time when Southport is rebuilding from the pandemic, removing vital on-street parking and littering our town’s streets with bollards is not the answer. I’m hosting this meeting to give residents and businesses the opportunity to share the impact the cycle lanes have had on them, and to provide an update on the way forward.

“I'd encourage everybody who shares my concerns with the town centre cycle lanes, the Liveable Neighbourhood Scheme, and the plans to extend the lanes across the town to come to the meeting so that we, as a community, can determine a way forward.”

Well, that should be a right barrel of laughs, lol!

N.B. I take it then, that Damian the arch anti-cyclist, will not be arriving at the venue on a bike?

If lots attend and once again an overwhelming vote of the vast majority for the removal of the lanes occurs will this make any difference? It’s a start anyway and there’s plenty of parking on Queens rd.

An 'overwhelming vote' is guaranteed - because only those opposed to the lanes can attend!

You should come and meet the people that are against you and the businesses you are ruining .

Lord Street has plenty of parking, yet a high percentage of retail units are empty or closing down. Hoghton St has limited parking, yet pretty much every unit is in use….. go figure.

Also, Mr Moore is hosting an event about cycle lane and active travel removal at a location where there is limited parking. So, if the event is well subscribed, either everyone got there via active travel or public transport, or they have driven and found somewhere to park! So, what’s the problem? If no one turns up, his little climate denial scam is dead…… Interesting to see what happens that day….. :-)

Nah, got better things to do, like enjoying a leisurely Saturday bikeride to a Velocafe for coffee and cake. Besides, if the last anti-cycling 'meet' (on Shakespeare St) is anything to go by, I doubt more than a dozen or so sorry fools will turn up.

You can. As long as you only access it from one of the side streets. Proving that parking in the area is available. Totally against Mr Moores agenda…. Glad we are getting somewhere eventually.

I thought the idea was to get rid of the no entry’s that everyone including the police ignore and cycle lanes, yea but for now it CAN be accessed from any side street and you CAN park on the cycle lanes so that makes a mockery of that. And cyclists just make sure you look back before overtaking parked cars in the cycle lanes. Anyway time will tell slowly slowly as they say.

Drivers, DONT attempt to overtake a cyclist that needs to pull out to pass a parked vehicle ahead of them. It’s not their responsibility to facilitate your overtake. Use your eyes, observations, appropriate speed (20mph), and plan ahead.
Also drivers, STOP at the first stop line at light controlled junctions, it is an offence to pass the first line on Red. Cyclists carry cameras and will report you.

It doesn’t matter how many cycles lanes are designated, there is a hardcore of who will always refuse to use them.
Just this morning, I was driving South along the Coast Road from Crossens, I was in a queue of probably ten or twelve cars all sat behind a selfish cyclist (he looked like he was in his 60’s) who was riding closer to the white line than the kerb, at 8mph. All the cars waited patiently until it was safe to overtake. Eventually, he pulled into the car park and I followed him in and pointed out, quite politely that there was a specially built cycle path, primarily to keep cyclists safe. All I got back from him was f*** off and mind your own business.

Even a little crying baby knows to look back before pulling out, you shouldn’t really need to be told that . You should look back before pulling out and look back after you pull back in. And if you come up to a parked car after looking back and seeing a line of vehicles you should stop and wait before pulling out in front of them any parent would teach their children this maybe you missed out on this making you think you can do what you want .. but you can’t because it’s just like stepping out onto a busy road and thinking the world will stop for you, Common sense will keep you alive, record what you want you won’t be at the screening if you ride like you preach .

It’s not their responsibility to facilitate your overtake. Use your eyes, observations, appropriate speed (20mph), and plan ahead.

No it’s your responsibility to look back signal and then pull out IF IT IS SAFE TO DO SO, that phrase is all over the law and the Highway Code and it’s your responsibility to stop if it’s not safe. There’s a little phrase us real drivers use on the road it’s Mirror, Signal, Manoeuvre ( if it’s safe to do so ) it’s a lifesaver. Has anyone ever seen a cyclist signal past a parked car, I only ever see them look back half the time it’s their responsibility to overtake safely or stop, car drivers are not mind readers and I know cyclists haven’t got much to read but indicating is a big thing on the road, if you ever became proper tested road users you would know that.

Fyi, when it comes to cycling issues/road safety, I've been in attendance at many meetings over the years. Either in the Birkdale Room at the Town Hall, or in the main Council chamber. Even attended at Bootle Town Hall a couple of times, i.e. when Birkdale Dune Path was under consideration for upgrade to shared usage, not to mention County Hall (Preston). So, far from being the 'keyboard warrior,' I do get out there when it matters.

N.B. If I did drop by the at Damians little affair, there'd be no point in it - as they'd soon chuck me and whoever else I had in tow out for heckling, lol!
