Just another accessory for people to pinch...

When vacationing/checking-out Southern France (pre-Covid) with a view to eventual retirement there, I had paused on my bike in a village. Out of the blue, a young boy approached smiling and for some reason started a brief conversation. Then, whilst I was still stood astride the bike and without a word. Fast as lightning, he made a grab at my speedo and gave it a sharp twist.

Fortunately, it wasn't of a bayonet-mount type, but attached with a pair of strong rubber bands and wouldn't detach. Failing, he ran off to vanish down an alley. Had I parked the bike and gone for a walk, I'm sure that speedo would have gone. Which did happen in another country on another occasion, even though the display is useless without its associated cable, mount and magnetic wheel-sensor.

Cyclist does NOT cause the car to crash. It's the irresponsible driver going too fast and being out of control.

However, I am quite happy and able to admit it was wholly the driver's fault, unlike the imbecile PNP who never admits cyclists are ever to blame for anything. Always an excuse to find a way out for them.

You do realise your opening post on this thread was about two cases TWO YEARS apart. TWO years…..!
You make out it’s a big issue, but fail to appreciate the real issue with thousands of drivers in those same two years causing 10’s thousands of injuries and/or deaths. Wake up….

It's the rarity-factor of a death by bike, that put the original incident in the spotlight. Whereas deaths by car are so commonplace, they have become daily events. Events which simply go under the radar...unless one happens right on our doorstep, we are unlikely hear about them.

We are only aware of these few incidents as a result of social media. libraryguy thinks it’s a sudden huge increase in a problem. But let’s face it, if cycling accidents increase by 100% (which they haven’t and never will), you’d still only have a handful per year, less that the total driver incidents per DAY….
And all of a sudden, cyclists are a menace that needs regulating apparently. But regulation hasn’t worked for drivers so that’s not a solution - trained, tested, licensed, insured, identifiable, and yet still ….. death and destruction daily…..

Difference is, you can lock a bike, making it harder to steal. You can even fit a tracker or Airtag to a bike, improving chances of recovery. Whereas accessories like a speedo can't be locked or tracked, making them an easy target for anyone passing.
