We are a 'threat to the world'.

Reported by the Financial Times and Guardian (I assume more to follow):

Boris Johnson’s plan to lift virtually all of England’s pandemic restrictions on Monday is a threat to the world and provides fertile ground for the emergence of vaccine-resistant variants, international experts say.

Britain’s position as a global transport hub would mean any new variant here would rapidly spread around the world, scientists and physicians warned at an emergency summit. They also expressed grave concerns about Downing Street’s plans.

Prof José Martin-Moreno of the University of Valencia, a senior adviser to the World Health Organization (WHO) said: “We cannot understand why this is happening in spite of the scientific knowledge that you have.”

So, anyone know what time the pandemic ends on Monday?

I can see much of the world following Bulgaria’s example and also banning us.

    Counter memorandum
The John Snow Memorandum, published in The Lancet,[85] is a response by 80 researchers denouncing the herd immunity approach of the Great Barrington Declaration.[17][86] Taking its name from John Snow, the epidemiologist who worked on the 1854 Broad Street cholera outbreak,[17][87] it states that the herd immunity idea is "a dangerous fallacy unsupported by the scientific evidence".[11] It acknowledges that coronavirus restrictions have led to demoralization, making such an idea attractive, but states that "there is no evidence for lasting protective immunity to SARS-CoV-2", adding that "such a strategy would not lead to the end of COVID-19, but instead result in recurrent epidemics, as was the case with numerous infectious diseases before the advent of vaccination."[11]

The letter's authors were co-ordinated by Deepti Gurdasani, clinical epidemiologist at Queen Mary University of London,[88][89] and included Marc Lipsitch, William Hanage,[90][11] Nahid Bhadelia,[11] Isabella Eckerle,[91] Emma Hodcroft,[91] Florian Krammer [de],[92] Martin McKee,[93] Dominic Pimenta,[94] Viola Priesemann,[89] Devi Sridhar,[95] Gavin Yamey,[96] and Rochelle Walensky.[11][97]

Other signatories included Reinhard Busse,[89] Christian Althaus,[91] Jacques Fellay,[91] Ilona Kickbusch,[91] and David Stuckler.[93]"

Scientists disagree on what to do.

Difficult for us people in the middle.
Still we have the option to continue to distance wear a mask not travel abroad.

I think the Barrington Declaration has been roundly dismissed by most scientists. And signed by "Mr Banana Rama", "Dr Johnny Bananas", "Dr Johnny Fartpants", "Dr Person Fakename", "Harold Shipman", "Professor Notaf Uckingclue".

I recall Sunetra Gupta backpedalling furiously on QT after she said Covid wasn't that dangerous, and Bruce reminded her how many people had actually died.

I think there are some diseases that may prove the case for herd immunity. But unless it is via vaccination, I think there are too many unknowns with Covid. The new revelations about lung and kidney damage in youngsters are worrying.

Although Donald Trump was a big supporter of the Declaration. Anthony Fauci not so much.

The Government's thinking and plan is obvious: they're not prepared to wait for sufficient vaccination administration to achieve their long-deferred goal of herd immunity, so they're allowing for an acceleration in the spread of infection to work in combination with the vaccine roll-out to achieve the herd immunity goal as quickly as possible.

For me, the clincher that that is the plan being rolled out is that the requirement for masks will be dropped. That is a senseless decision - save for it being part of the plan to maximise the infection spread.

I've said 'masks' there but of course I'm upgrading the specification, as the requirement has only been for 'face coverings'. That flimsy, comically vague requirement can be contrasted to the German requirement of having to wear a 'medical mask' for most public transport use and shopping.

I've noticed that I'm not hearing from any of the Government's ministers etc is that the link between infection and long-Covid has been broken. I also suppose the Government has decided that hospital staff have had a long enough break now from being at the sharp end of dealing with the effects of Covid waves and so they're overdue tackling another one. Once more into the breach, as they say.

Dropping requirements while issuing contrary guidance is window-dressing, blame-shifting, and is guidance aimed at failing on purpose, and will generate a slew of knock-on problems. For example, the Employment Tribunal service is already massively over-subscribed and the Government's strategy will add substantially to the workload.

It's being predicted that as businesses are increasingly shutting due to the 'NHS' Covid app sending half a million isolation alerts in a week, then people will start deleting the app "en masse". I don't think it's cynical to sense or suspect that the Government will not be too displeased if people do indeed delete the app in large numbers.

If the Government do reintroduce a requirement (or two), you can guarantee the implication will be that this restriction has had to be reluctantly imposed due to people not following the guidance and overall being negligent regards their responsibility to people. Jesus, the irony.

I think the PM sells to himself this coming Monday as his delivery of a Churchillian 'freedom day' that will be recorded in the history books as being on a par with VE Day.

I know a family in Brazil. Things are so bad there with Covid they are trying to get to Portugal. They are gobsmacked with what is going on here. And they've got Bolsonaro, so they take some surprising.

    I couldn't agree more.

I imagine Johnson is under major pressure from the ERG. All rabid Covidiots as far as I can tell. So I hope that meetings are being recorded and conversations taped should the eventual enquiry lead to criminal proceedings.

I'd also like to hear more from Chris Whitty. It's blindingly obvious he's not in agreement with 'Freedom Day'. As in the previous post, I suppose there's a comparison there with Trump and Fauci.

The situation with masks is ridiculous. They are supposed to be following the science (later downgraded to 'listening to the scientists') so I don't know why the requirement couldn't remain on public transport, indoor public places, etc. Short of a bus trip to Ormskirk, and a short train journey, I've never needed a mask on for more than 30 minutes. It wasn't a huge problem at all.

So now we are looking at 200 deaths a day and 2000 hospitalisations every 24 hours in a fortnight, when the whole point of lockdown was to ensure the NHS wasn't overwhelmed. Madness.

As you say, it will be all our fault. I'm in the fortunate position of being able to work from home, but a lot of friends and family aren't. I'm sticking with my 'bubble' for the foreseeable.

Well, I don't plan to do things any differently after the 'big day'....Will continue with mask, keeping my distance whenever possible, washing hands and being mindful of whatever I touch when out, etc.

As to the time it is ending, it rather depends on whether the virus can read the time or not. Has anyone informed the virus it had to cease activity on Monday?

There is growing concern and criticism for the actions of our government from around the world, sure we have done very well getting vaccines out, but overall our record of handling and controlling the pandemic is one of the worst, certainly among developed countries.

We keep seeing the announcements ref the “traffic light” travel system, yet we are already at the point were travel will be determined by which countries will admit travellers from the UK, rather than countries we approve.

Now that the Cummings Puppet Master theory has been doused by reality is the ERG the regurgitated phantom pantomime baddy of the left?

I've said and believed from the beginning of the pandemic that we are just going to have to learn to live with it. I think the virus will continue to mutate and perhaps become resistant to the vaccines, although we will also build up a natural resistance to it as time passes.
I've received both jabs and I will continue to sanitise and wear a mask for the time being when in crowded areas, and avoid large crowds where possible. Hopefully this will be enough to avoid serious consequences, but there are no guarantees.
