Paul Bayes, the Bishop of Liverpool, has called for a gender-neutral marriage canon to be brought into law.
Bishop Paul, 67, whose diocese includes churches in Southport and Formby, said the Church of England should recognise marriage between people of the same sex and allow such ceremonies to take place in church.
It's not known how his forthright comments will be received by conservative Christians locally after his comments during the keynote speech on Saturday for the network Mosaic Anglicans, a church coalition focused on a range of issues, including race and sexuality.
"I want to see a gender-neutral marriage canon, such as they have in the Episcopal Church (in the U.S) or in the Scottish Episcopal Church, he said. And, as a necessary but not sufficient first step, I want to see conscientious freedom for the Church's ministers and local leaders to honour, recognise, and, yes indeed, to bless same-sex unions, whether civil partnerships or civil marriages.
"... I want to see an end to LGBTQ+ people hiding who they are for fear of being exposed to conversion therapy or to being forbidden to minister in churches.
"I want to see an end to the inquisition of ordinands about their private lives. I want to see all this before I die," he said.
He went on to say he wanted the church to remain as one church.
"I want to see the conscientious rights of conservative people preserved for them. But I don't want any longer to see the conscientious rights of progressive people, who believe the truth of the Archbishops of Canterbury and York when they ask for a radical NEW Christian inclusion, I don't want to see their consciences ignored and explained away and overridden and indeed criminalised by the power of conservative groups and people."
He added that same-sex love and the blessing of its expression had become his agenda as bishop.
"Although I never asked for this agenda before I came to Liverpool, I am glad to have inhabited that space now. As I grow older and the arc of my own ministry draws close to its end, I am glad to be able to speak wholeheartedly for a vision of Christian community that does not stink of oppression or of hypocrisy in the nostrils of the world," he commented.
Bayes has become increasingly outspoken on LGBTQ+ rights in recent years - the C of E's ruling body, the General Synod, will once again discuss issues of sexuality at an online meeting, in just under two weeks' time.

As taken from one of the many, misogynistic, imaginary friend instructions manuals.

Also, according to Genesis, the earth was created approximately 10,000 years ago. Absolute rhubarb.

The Bible is a collection of stories, many of which attempted to explain occurrences which the learned of the time did not understand, along the way ancient legends were incorporated into the stories with explanations provided by the elite of the day.
Then of course it graduated and was manipulated as a tool of control by assorted churches, believe what you wish, but the Bible is mainly a work of fiction, some good messages sure, but mostly totally irrelevant, ALL so called religious books were put together by men, certainly not by some almighty deity.
The boarding house owners who were taken to court for not allowing homosexuals to stay in THEIR home, the bakers who were taken to court for refusing to make a cake for two homosexuals who were getting "married", did they have to swear on the Bible that they would tell the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help me God.
Then did the courts go against the teachings of the very book they have just sworn with.
Religion is a joke, and people who SELL a service should have the right to refuse anyone they like. Is it discrimination if a pub landlord refuses to serve you as far as I know they can.
A campsite recently refused a family entrance to a camp site because they were scousers pity they didn't have the foresight to say they were homosexual and lesbian they may have got in then.
What a ridiculous world we have been led blindfolded into and we can't comment.

People who sell a service have a right to refuse such service so long as it isn't discrimatry, a landlord can refuse to serve drinks to someone who is drunk, in fact it is a requirement of the license to do so.
To refuse to sell a service based on sexual orientation is discriminatory therefore is against the law just as it is to refuse to sell a service based on age, colour, ethnicity or gender.
How would you feel if you were told you can't stay in the boarding house because you are male, over 50, black or Scottish.

The same as the Scousers I presume, that was discriminatory. But my question about swearing on the Bible so you can get convicted of something the bible says is a sin then it is more than grey it is very dark grey.

If the reason given was for being from Liverpool then yes that is discriminatory, as far as I'm concerned as would turning away a group of lads as was suggested in the news article.
You would swear on the bible to tell the truth if you have a religion, I don't so would swear an oath. Presumably the couple with the boarding house swore on the bible as they have a religion the court based the judgement on law regardless of what form of oath was sworn.
Swearing an oath is pretty pointless anyway, as an honest person I would tell the truth regardless, if you are trying to get off a crime you are hardly likely to tell the truth whether you have sworn an oath or not.
As for religion, I don't have one, the bible is a book of stories, don't believe in the almighty and if there is someone up their then he/she is one twisted person.
