1. Any extension to the school holiday meals from the Gov is hard to withdraw due to the backlash.
Fine, there are so many children in poverty, make ensuring EVERY child in this country never goes hungry a law. There are basic human rights, and kids in this, the 5th richest country in the world, should receive all of them: the right to shelter, food, education, safety,
2. The next generation will be paying the costs.
The next generation will be paying for everything, anyway. So it's OK to spaff billions up the wall on companies that didn't exist a few weeks or months ago, or on track & trace systems that don't work, or on PPE that' useless, but not on children?
If children are hungry, they don't develop physically, emotionally or educationally. The cost of a generation lost to those things is higher than ensuring kids in poverty get fed.
3. People who work in the school meals provision surely are already more at risk of catching the virus by repeated contact risk and the low wage bracket.
When the children were fed throughout the summer, do you think they all turned up at a school canteen? They received food vouchers to be spent at supermarkets, not lined up holding bowls for a ladle full of gruel like a scene out of Oliver Twist.
It must be very expensive planning and funding the leading out a mini tot to walk with a footballer every game how much more worthwhile to use that money for a permanent child charity.
WTAF? What has football to do with anything? What has the cost of a mascot to do with anything? The welfare of a country is down to the government, not a sports club.
I thought I'd seen it all this year. But being so obsessed with the supremacy of the Tory party that you actually lose all humanity is frankly disgusting. For Christ's sake, these are hungry kids. What next, stick them in a workhouse, let them earn it?
Obviously Rashford has more decency in his little finger than Tory voters could dream about. And here's me thinking that Tories really appreciated track suited figures with a particular interest in kids.
Words fail me. Absolutely horrific.

Not sure on this, but I believe this includes any establishment which undertakes NHS work, bear in mind the company supplying the data are suppliers of medical textiles, which can be bought by anyone with their core business being supply through NHS supply chain which supplies dentist, opticians anyone in fact doing NHS work.

Yet votes against two initiatives that really will affect the health and wellbeing of an awful lot of people. Most people on low incomes, or no income at all, couldn't give a flying fish cake about losing access to a gym Food on the table and the ability to keep a roof over your head should take priority. GRRRRRR
Not really - there are facebook entries from certain people who have managed to take advantage of the furlough money without being eligible for it. Businesses can not be supported for ever, how long do they expect the payments to be for? - though, if they are Labour supporters they would expect to be paid forever - they must make their own way forward without relying on handouts. Everyone knew that the arrangement was until the end of October only.
I cannot understand why Free School meals are necessary. There is no reason for children to go hungry in this day and age in the UK because the benefits given to families is at the highest level they have even been before, sometimes surpassing the earnings of ordinary hard working people. I have seen many working class people in great poverty who cannot get the equivalent generous benefit support because they are working. I have also known couples who are on benefits who found it hard to put a dinner on the table - in the latter case a massive television set, the latest games, pets and electronics took precedence. Here in Southport, a loaf of bread often costs around 5p - 10p, a jar of jam is 50p, margarine 79p. For less than £2 two children can have sandwiches for lunch for a week. Not hard since children in the 70's were given bread and dripping and survived.
On benefits, a young couple with two young children, paying £750 per month rent receive £18,180 per year. Insurance stamps credited.
Compared to a worker on basic pay, working six hours day whose take home pay is £11, 800.+ wife working part time £3,400 a year = £15,200.
Compared to a pensioner's income = around £7000 - £8000 a year.
I think it would be more beneficial for parents to learn to take responsibility for themselves.

Utter bullshite. This image of people on benefits with massive TVs and the best phones etc is nonsense. There are 14 million people in this country in poverty, working or otherwise. You haven't a frigging clue what food costs. Which 70s? 1770s? 1870s?

They are all in poverty. One type of poverty doesn't cancel another. One isn't lesser or more than another. A couple, not working, two kids and paying £750 pm in rent would have £220 pw to live on. https://www.entitledto.co.uk/ Still poverty.
And the point is, the kids are starving. So just let them starve because they might have bad or poverty stricken parents?
Or maybe you like them skinny?
Inhuman trash. Vile inhuman trash. I hope all you're willing to visit on these kids returns to you nasty *******s a thousand times worse.

I would rather put my trust in Andy Burnham than in the legions of so called "experts". He might, obviously, have half an eye on the political fall out but he also has access to the actual figures - cases, deaths, etc. The rest of us are being fed massaged figures every day through the media bulletins - most of which are designed to create "riveting news" (yawn).

The whole thing smacks of party politics, "can't allow a Labour politician to look as if he has achieved something" refuse to talk further, then do what he requested but, put it down to purely government initiative.

I read on FB today that if Andy Burnham had registered Gtr Manchester as a brand new small limited company, with no experience in making PPE, no staff and £300 in the bank, he'd have had £100 million by tea time.

Rashford is a well respected influential footballer capable of carrying on his campaign for a long term solution.
Free school meal vouchers do not cover all children in need.
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/u...-a9577231.html
Guardian
"There has been a surge in the number of UK children registering for free school meals, with an estimated 1 million pupils recently signing up for the first time, according to food poverty campaigners.
Analysis by the Food Foundation thinktank, released as part of footballer Marcus Rashford’s campaign to end child food poverty, estimates that as many as 900,000 more children have sought free school meals, on top of the 1.4 million who were already claiming, as the Covid-19 crisis plays havoc with family incomes."
What is happening to free school meals in the holidays?
Quote
"Food parcels for collection or delivery
The government's centrally-funded national voucher scheme
Alternative vouchers for a local shop or supermarket"

It needs a long term solution.

As long as he paid tax on it he would still pass for a modern socialist.

Behave will you, Andy Burnham was trying to do his best for his people, while Westminster played party politics, of course we should all be down on our knees worshipping the Tories, questioning the actions of Johnson isn't permitted in Tory dream land, the same dream land that refuses coppers for school kids meals during school holidays and applauds that refusal, sickening hypocrisy.

You can't say that. Tory supremacy is life, don't you know. No matter how they screw up the country, how they rob the coffers, how they are totally devoid of any morality whatsoever.
Blind Tory supremacy to the point of attacking Marcus Rashford for wanting poverty stricken children to, well, eat. Or attacking Andy Burnham for trying to keep businesses alive and people in jobs.
There's dedication to the Tory cause, and there is casting aside every shred of humanity to make the Nasty Party as vile and obscene as possible.
All for a Cabinet of incompetent despots who see their little followers as gullible northern morons that they would cross the street to avoid.
Even Thatcher (may she never rest in peace) would be entirely sickened by them.
I used to enjoy the banter. Now it's just abject horror that there isn't a grain of decency left. If Johnson slaughtered a pregnant woman in broad daylight, they'd excuse him by saying he was doing his bit to help the NHS.
Vile.

"It suggested that Greater Manchester’s hospitals are quickly heading towards being overwhelmed by the sheer number of people with Covid needing emergency care to save their lives, in the same way that those in Liverpool have become in recent weeks. By Friday 211 of the 257 critical care beds in Greater Manchester – 82% of the total supply – were already being used for either those with Covid or people who were critically ill because of another illness.
Greater Manchester hospitals admitted 110 new patients with confirmed or suspected Covid in the 24 hours before the spreadsheet was produced and shared with NHS bosses on Friday, illustrating the intense pressure they are coming under. That took the total number of Covid cases they were dealing with then to 520.
The revelation came as the impasse continued between the government and Andy Burnham, the Greater Manchester mayor, as well as many other local leaders and MPs. Ministers have designated Greater Manchester a tier 3 area, requiring the toughest sort of local lockdown, but Burnham said this can only happen with greater support for businesses forced to close such as pubs, and those left without income."
