Bold Street in Southport is partially blocked this morning after the front wheel of a Hartley Travel mini bus fell off. There were no passengers on board at the time.

It hasn't fallen off, it's still attached to the wheel hub. It looks like the ball joint for the steering has broken forcing the wheel into the rear of the wheel arch.
If it had fallen off it would be away from the vehicle altogether.
Do try and be correct.
And in other news, people read their newspapers and had their breakfasts!

On a serious note - this does raise legitimate questions about maintenance schedules and how rigorously the required checks for such a vehicle have been conducted.

Morning walk round check carried out by the driver would probably just be a visual inspection of the tyres and wheel nuts, makes you wonder when the vehicle was last serviced though?

A 15-16 year old vehicle (going by the 05 registration), rusting around the doors etc. I'm not sure I'd want to travel in it.

I don't know the name of the company, I don't think it was this one but somebody I used to work with had a child that was collected by one of these buses to be taken to school. He noticed one day that the Reg on the Tax disc didn't match the the bus, the driver told him that they couldn't afford to tax and insure all the vehicles because Sefton didn't pay enough so the company swapped tax and number plates off the out of service vehicles onto serviceable vehicles.

A quick google could have saved yourself looking like a prize prck (again).
A drivers daily walk round check is a legal requirement. I should know, I do one every day of my working week.
Drivers should visually check:
the tyres and wheels are secure
the tyres have a tread depth of at least 1mm
the tyres are inflated correctly
there are no deep cuts in the tyre’s sidewall
there is no cord visible anywhere on the tyre
all wheel nuts are tight enough - you can check if wheel nut indicators (if fitted) have moved to do this
there are no objects or debris trapped between the twin wheels

After a 50 year career as a road haulier, I’ve done more daily vehicle checks than you’ve had hot dinners. Incidentally, just to add to your superior knowledge, tyres have to have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm to be legal, and a drivers daily walk around check involves a lot more than than just checking wheels and tyres.

You’re wrong. Maybe you were a “road haulier” in your clown mobile? Car minimum tread depth is different to that of buses and lorry’s. LGV and PCV tyres must have 1mm tread throughout a continuous band across at least three quarters of the breadth of the tread and around the entire circumference. I’m well aware of what walk round checks entail. This post was about the vehicles defective wheel, so not much point listing everything. Duh!

Sefton didn't pay enough?
What he meant was the company put in a low price to get the contract but had to cut corners and break the law to make it profitable or increase profits.
